Some time ago Duncurin bought a nice little vacuum cleaner from Amazon. It was a nice little thing and by no means expensive. I thought I’d use it in the garage to vac out my car and also to provide extraction for my woodworking. This was a big mistake as I didn’t realise that sawdust kills vacuum cleaners pretty quickly - regardless of whether they have a bag or not. The poor thing clogged up in no time and I spent longer trying to unblock the poor thing and the motor. There is one thing that is even worse than sawdust and that is concrete and cement dust which is even more effective at destroying any domestic vacuum cleaner in double quick time.Some time ago my friend was having a clear out of his workshop. He gave me a monster table saw and some 12” blades that looked as though they had come from the Pit and the Pendulum and also a massive extraction thingy that looked as though the Montgolfier brothers had previously owned it. I didn’t realise but this is the kind of kit you need if you are serious about extracting dust, sawdust and cement dust. I had a concrete floor to grind and I thought there’d be a lot of dust. Perhaps an amount of dust to create a sandstorm would be more accurate and I knew that the 16l wet and dry vacuum I’d bought from our local DIY store would never cope. In point of fact it did quite well mainly because you could use a large filter bag in the unit to act as a ‘foil’ for the dust between the main filter and the motor. Without these bags the little vacuum would have been soon overwhelmed and as it was the disposable bags filled every couple of minutes and had to be replaced. The instructions are very clear that using it without a bag for dust will invalidate your guarantee and the reason is that nothing short of the Montgolfier industrial extraction as above could cope – or so I thought.Enter this cyclonic extraction unit which is just fabulous. It locates between the vacuum and the pick-up hose and links with a suitable receptacle to collect all the dust. Please note the instructions are truly dreadful and the English text used/chosen (okay its far better than my Chinese) really grates so I couldn’t bring myself to read them and just made it up as I went along. Choice of receptacle is crucial and will be reviewed separately. I chose this unit because it came with all the adapters and jubilee clips to form a tight seal with the two hoses I had already and of course the vacuum unit. These were a bit tight but worked really well and in no time I was all connected up. Without these adapters I would not have been able to effect secure and air-tight connections which would have lowered the effectiveness of the unit. I also used a bit of heavy-duty tape around some of the hoses as they were corrugated and I wanted to make sure that there was a tight seal where the connections were made. This too worked really well in conjunction with the adapters and the jubilee clips as supplied.I must confess it worked really well. Please take note of the points made in the next review ‘Receptacle’ but, given these points, it was fabulous. The sight of the dust whizzing round the vortex unit and dropping into the receptacle was amazing and most importantly it protected the vacuum unit and meant that I didn’t have to use as many disposable bags as the bulk of the dust and sawdust went into the receptacle. It also makes a lovely reassuring sound as all the gubbins are collected and drop into the receptacle rather than clogging up the bag and filters of your vacuum unit. For dust – any sort of dust - this unit is absolutely essential and the other point is that although it looks a bit Heath Robinson-ish it is fairly compact.Photo shows unit mounted on the blue receptacle and also connected up to my old vacuum cleaner which is an old upright which given this unit has been given a new lease of life! Just one other point is that despite really tight seals you also need a fairly punchy vacuum cleaner and mine are both 1100W and I think (EU regulations permitting) this is the minimum you’ll need if you are serious about extracting the dust.
