I bought this thermometer for in such a big American refrigirator, one sensor in the freezer and the other in the cooling part for drinks, etc. It worked good for 2 years, but now the sensors suddenly started to have connection problems with the main station. But after opening the 2 sensors I quickly saw the problem. Four connections in the printed circuit board were simply completely not soldered, so the connection was only there because of the surface contact between the wire and the copper on the printed circuit board. I soldered them again and they work perfectly again But in general the soldering of the Surface mounted device was also very poor, so you can see why they are quite cheap. And when I was looking for info on this item it suprised me to see that at least 2 times it is mentioned not to place them near metal, but why are there even 4 magnets on the back of the thermometer........? And that's no problem at all, as mentioned they worked already 2 years perfect, and now after resoldering I am sure they will continue to work again.

So, I decided something had to be done as I've already ended up in the dog house twice in the last few months having not shut the freezer door properly and leaving it slightly ajar. The surprise of a defrosted freezer was not discovered until the following morning by which time most of the food had thawed to the extent where it needed cooking straightaway or throwing away entirely. Not good!I started looking for fridge/freezer thermometers with alarms and saw there are plenty that have the thermistors (temperature sensing parts) attached to the digital display via long wires. Although this will work well in principle the only way to place the sensors is by having the cables running in-between the door seals etc. which not only looks quite untidy but you could potentially be breaking the vacuum seal that the freezer creates when the door is closed.I came across the Oria Fridge/Freezer Thermometer with 2 wireless sensors which has also received very positive reviews. I thought what a great idea and decided to buy one as a wireless solution would certainly deal with my prior concerns of tidiness and door seals. You'll need a few batteries to get up an running as they are not provided. The main display requires 2 x AAA batteries and the wireless sensors require 2 x AA batteries each (for a total of 4 x AA batteries). I've used rechargeable Duracell batteries for all of it and they work fine, although the battery indicators for the wireless sensors say the batteries are half full even when fully charged. I've had this a few times with rechargeable batteries and suspect it's down to them only providing 1.2V instead of 1.5V. Initially I was concerned the batteries might stop working after a few days of being in the freezer but they've been absolutely fine for weeks now.A few people have said that the instructions were difficult to follow or abruptly written. I personally did not find this to be the case and found them easy to follow especially as there are images of the buttons in the instructions which takes out most of the guess work. Perhaps the manual has been revised recently? Like with a lot of products these days they are often made in countries such as China and the instructions are often badly translated which makes for poor reading. The product actually seems quite well made with the main unit having a very clear and concise display. It has a magnetised back so I've stuck it on the fridge door and it hasn't moved (i.e. slid down on its own). The 2 remote units are quite large and have a slightly odd spring clip to attach them to shelves so I've just laid them down in the corner of the fridge and freezer and they work perfectly. The main display can actually monitor the 2 wireless sensors and the room temperature at the same time which is great. The alarm is annoying enough that I can hear it anywhere in the house. Unfortunately that alarm won't help if the freezer door is left open in the morning before going to work though! My wireless sensors are reporting a lower temperature by 2 degrees Celsius so I just took that into account when setting the alarm thresholds. I would definitely recommend comparing your sensors with a known working thermometer.I was very surprised to see how much the temperatures vary over time as it displays the highest and lowest temperatures recorded. The room temperature clearly plays a noticeable part in the temperature of the fridge and freezer which both seem to have a recorded range of about 6 degrees Celsius.Overall I am really impressed with this purchase. I think it's excellent value for money and it works perfectly.Pros:- Great value- Wirelessly monitor fridge, freezer and room temperatures- Alarms can be set for all 3 temperatures, each with a different temperature range- Works perfectly with rechargeable batteries- Magnetised back so it can be easily attached to metal surfaces, i.e. fridge door- Simple to useNeutral:- Batteries not included so you will need to buy 2 x AAA and 4 x AA- Battery indicator shows half full for fully charged rechargeable batteriesNegative:- Wireless sensors are quite large and not easy to mount- Temperature is a couple of degrees Celsius out

BACKGROUNDI don't like shopping and have supermarket deliveries every few weeks, living on stocks in between. My small indoor freezer is not sufficient for this so I have a second freezer in an outbuilding. Recently, my outdoor freezer was accidentally switched off and, because it is not accessed frequently, had fully defrosted before the problem was identified. I installed this device to monitor both freezers, with the base unit beside the indoor freezer and about 7 metres from the outdoor freezer, passing through a brick wall and a timber framed and clad wall with plasterboard lining. The sensors are in polythene bags to protect from moisture laying in a central draw among the produce.SETUPI found installation and set-up, including linking the sensors to the base unit, straightforward following the supplied instructions. I monitored the temperatures of the freezers for a few days and then set the alarms to 5 deg. C above and below the extremes noted to allow a safety margin to avoid false alarms whilst still giving adequate protection.I have, initially, used alkaline batteries that I had available will change the sensors to lithium when they need replacement as advised in the listing.FUNCTION and TESTThis has been in use about a couple of weeks and, of course, needs no other maintenance - it simply sits on the side and displays the temperatures. There has been no connection problem and no evidence of interference with any other wireless devices I (or my neighbours, so far as I know) have.Comparing the readings with other thermometers I find agreement within a degree or so - probably as good as can be expected from these devices and certainly good enough for my purpose of monitoring in case of defrost.A simple test, for both sensors but independently, was to remove them from the freezer and allow them to warm towards room temperature. In both cases the alarms sounded a few minutes after the set maximum temperature was reached.Alarm volume (not adjustable) was adequate to hear the alarm throughout most of the house, though not outside. It would not be loud enough to wake me at night but, providing the alarm temperature is set thoughtfully, this would not be necessary - the rate of temperature rise should mean that a few more hours will not be critical.Obviously, since this is only an audible alarm it will not help in the event of failure during absence (e.g. holidays). That would require some form of internet inked device and this is not intended for that purpose.AN AMBIGUITYThe device displays the max and min temperatures reached by the monitored freezers. Logically, it should not be possible for the max value to show a decrease (and vice versa for min) but this happens. It seems to me that the max and min displays are not values since reset (by the 'clear' button) but only the max and min over a finite period of time - perhaps the last 24 hours. I posted a question to obtain other users views but he results were conflicting and I never (at the time of writing) had comment from the supplier. I can only say that if the max and min functions are important to anyone's application then they should carry out their own tests and form an opinion on this.

Really useful to be able to see the actual internal temperature inside the freezer. After having a defrosting problem I nearly lost all of my food. Using this I can now see the internal temperature (dont be fooled by that temperature on the freezer, its usually only what the theoretical setting is and not the actual).Love that the outside monitor is magnetic so it just attaches to the front door without any further assistance. Great that there are 2 internal probes. I have mine at the top and middle of the freezer. As my freezer started to defrost from the top it would highlight and future issues before it gets to the point of ruining the food.I did buy the special batteries for cold use. Not sure if they were needed but at -18 to -23C its better to be safe than sorry.Really pleased with this as I can now check the temperature when I pass the freezer.
