If you're using a "smaller" adult backpack or hydration pack for your kid, you need to take a look at Osprey's kid specific packs. The 18L is a pretty good size for my 8-year-old son. He's decently tall for his age, but still a small person. I usually carry a 19L pack as a day pack, so I thought 18L should be more than sufficient for him. It's large enough to will allow him to carry water, snacks, layers, and have plenty of space for a couple fun items for him, without being too large. In another year or two, it might be time to graduate him to the 28L. For the moment, he doesn't need a huge pack because just having him carry his own drinks, snacks and layers is sufficient enough to reduce the weight that my wife or I will have to carry for him.Osprey makes good packs. We haven't had any durability issues with any of the Osprey packs we've owned. The price may seem like a lot to spend on a child's pack, but it's your kid, you should want to invest in comfortable and durable items that will promote an active lifestyle.

It works equally as well for the trail as is does for an overnight bag for sleepovers. But like all Osprey products, its seriously overpriced. At $70, I would not purchase this unless there was a hefty coupon available.

Like everything Osprey makes, this pack screams quality. Using recycled materials and robust hardware, it's a pack that will last for years. The 18L is the perfect size for our 6yr old scout and he wears it on campouts and hikes with no complaints.

I got this for us to use when my 5 y/o grandson starts backpacking with us this year. this is a very high quality backpack and he will be able to get lots of use out of it between us and his parents going backpacking. the pack is rated for 5-8 y/o and looks appropriately sized on him. It has padded shoulder straps, a chest strap and a waist strap. This is truly set up as nicely as my own but for a child. There is a pocket for an external water bladder (Hydration branded) and it has a breathable foam 'Airscape" on the back to keep air flow going. It is important to have a pack for kids that will keep the weight of the load close to the body so that they can be more balanced while hiking or climbing and this does that. It says that it is an 18 L pack but we will very carefully test to see what will be an appropriate weight for our grandson and work up from there. I am very happy with this high quality pack and will be able to use it for several years as my grandson grows. I recommend.

Small but fits a lot of things inside. It's a high quality backpack. The price is pretty high though, so I'd wait for it to go on sale.
