I got this backpack for my son who is seven years old numerically, by the growth chart at the doctor he's more like an average 12 year old. This backpack is just about topped out in terms of size for him.The design is very similar to adult backpacks with a hint of decontenting. That is, there are fewer zippers. The hip belt pouches are stretchy rather than zippered (minus two zippers), and the main compartment is top load only (minus one large waterproof zipper). I think the design choices make sense. Kids can have a hard time with too many options on loading a bag. This way, the main compartment is very straightforward.For extra capacity, we keep the sleeping bag clipped to the bottom two lash points on the back of the bag. It also makes a good cushion to lean on when sitting down with the pack.,The shoulder straps are plenty long and easy to adjust. I like the rigid fill on the piping along the curve of the straps.The airscape back is their signature sweat reduction system and it works well in this pack, like it does in their others for higher activity levels.The emergency whistle gives a very high pitched "toot toot" whistle like the Popeye song, without consuming much breath. That's good, as in an emergency situation a kid (or adult for that matter) could easily be out of breath.The neon green on green color is fun for kids. Maybe a little loud for adults, but they also like to wear tie dye so . . .The inside nametag really tells the intent here. It has three spots for subsequent users. A bag this well made will easily make it to a second kid and very possibly make it all the way to a third.It would be hard to make a better kid backpacking backpack at any price.

We ordered the Ace 50 for our older one and this Jet 28 for our younger. They are both fantastic and similar in design. The jet doesn't have the same hard framed curved back but still has some variant of the 'Airscape' back, which is a mesh outer layer and foam pad with holes. And still does a good job of keep the back ventilated. The pack does a good job of transferring weight to the waist and there is plenty of padding at the waist. The large opening with a drawstring makes it easy to load and access. However, the drawstring clip is a little difficult to operate for kids. Knock 1/2 a star off.Unlike the Ace, the Jet doesn't get a pocket for hydration bladder nor a rain cover which I think is the right choice for kids pack. Right now my kids ability to hike is the limiting factor and not the pack. I hope she'll grow/train up to push this bag to its limits.

Hey, just got this kid-sized Osprey pack for my nephew who thinks he’s Bear Grylls reincarnated. It looks legit, not some kiddie toy bag you'd lose at the park. Seriously, it's like a miniature version of a legit backpacker's rig, complete with clever compartments that even I’m slightly jealous of. Fits him great, and he's been packing random stuff in it just to wear around the house (a clear sign of approval). Plus, it survived a mud puddle cannonball test on its first hike. Definitely recommend it for younger adventurers—or even small adults who aren't above jealousy.
