Overkill: The Untold Story of Motorhead

I've always liked most of Joel McIver's choices for book subjects--he very often picks some of my favorite bands to write about. The same is true for this career-spanning Motorhead biography. My problem with this book is my problems with most of his books--it is, as always, a well-researched and fairly all-encompassing history of the band, which appears to be taken from old interviews and articles. The writing is good, the history complete. The problem is there are few new stones overturned, no new or particularly probing interview with people in or close to the band, and if you are well-versed with the history of the band in question--here, the mighty Motorhead--this book with disappoint you in that 95% of it you already know. Essentially, it is a litany of highlights, illustrated by archive interviews and retreading long-known lore.McIver's a pretty well-known rock author by now. His books get international release and must sell well, because they keep coming. You'd think he could use that position to get some more illuminating interviews and some more depth rather than his usual efficient, b-level summary. So, anyway--decent book, good for new fans.

2nd read of this mighty tome. Read it before Lem died, now since. Great tale of the underdog rockers, from the squats of London to the never ending tour that Lemmy and the Lads finally bowed out on. They played Rock N Effin Roll. We are blessed that they did.

This is a pretty cool book and covers Lemmy from his formative teenage years, the Rocking Vicars, Hawkwind and of course, Motorhead until about 2009. Like other unauthorised rock biograpahies (and Joel McIver books), it is cropped and accumulated from many sources and interviews, many of which the fans of a particular subject would have read beforehand, but that isn't the major flaw with this book.I'll leave you with the biggest issue I had. Talking about the 1960's London rock scene, four words ruined it for me. "Cream bassist Noel Redding."If you realise the problem with that, you'll look at the book with a bit more scepticism.

Ich habe zu diesem Buch gegriffen, weil es hier um die Story von Motörhead gehen sollte. Nicht um die Story von Lemmy. (Obwohl das ja zu einem guten Teil dasselbe ist). Nichts gegen Lemmys Autobiographie -- der Mann weiß eine Menge spannender Dinge zu erzählen. Aber mich interessierte halt nicht nur Lemmys Sicht, sondern auch mal, wie seine Bandkollegen bzw. die Leute um ihn herum ihn denn eigentlich sehen. Was ja nicht zwangsläufig identisch sein muss.Natürlich kann man bei dem geringen Umfang des Buches keine echte Tiefenforschung erwarten. Und es scheint, der Autor hat viele der Beteiligten auch gar nicht selbst gefragt, sondern zitiert schlicht deren Interviews oder auch Statements von anderer Seite, um jedem Blickwinkel gerecht zu werden und -im optimalen Fall- daraus ein halbwegs objektives Bild zu basteln.Inwieweit das gelungen ist, ist schwer zu beurteilen. Es kommt halt immer darauf an, wen man fragt (in diesem Falle: wen man zitiert). Und wieviel Unabhängigkeit der Betreffende sich leisten will -- Lemmy stellt schließlich für viele aus seinem Umfeld noch immer einen ernstzunehmenden Wirtschaftsfaktor dar.Ich war begeistert von den ersten paar Motörhead-Line-ups, habe die Band nach der Trennung von Brian Robertson jedoch aus den Augen verloren. Insofern kann ich mich absolut nicht als echten Motörhead-Fan und damit Kenner bezeichnen. Ob ein "richtiger" Motörhead-Fan aus diesem Buch neue Erkenntnisse ziehen kann, weiß ich nicht. Mir gibt es einfach so ein bisschen das Feeling der alten Zeiten zurück. Es ist flott und unterhaltsam geschrieben und beleuchtet kurz die einzelnen Etappen der Motörhead-Geschichte, - nicht immer, aber durchaus auch mal Lemmy-kritisch. Aufgrund der Kürze geht es aber nur an ausgewählten Stellen ins Detail und kann natürlich längst nicht alles abdecken.Vermutlich mehr unterhaltsamer Lesestoff als wirklich ein Sachbuch, aber auf jeden Fall niemals langweilig!
