My wife's 2011 21.5" iMac was slowing down gradually until one day the hard drive failed completely. I already had the new SSD and this cable on hand ready, as I saw it coming. The cable actually arrived a day or two before the old HD failed. I was a bit uneasy about doing this myself, but it went well after watching OWC's instruction video. I have done quite a few SSD's and other internal work on Dell PC's, Macbook Pro's, and my Mac Pro Tower. This was the first iMac, though. The new SSD did not take, and after much troubleshooting and having the iMac apart a few times, I ended up having to install another SSD. One test in the process was to install the first SSD w/o this cable. I noted that the fans were noticeably running higher right away without the cable. The first SSD still failed to work anyway. So, I swapped the Crucial MX500 500GB that would not boot up the mac OS for an MX300 525GB that I already had in the Mac Pro. It worked perfectly. As does this cable...and now my wife's iMac is super quiet, and super fast.I would NOT install an SSD in a 2011 iMac w/o this cable. A fan control app is simply not the real solution like this simple cable is. This cable works as it should to control the fans. I went from being uneasy about taking the iMac apart to becoming a "pro" at it, and I am now ready to put a new SSD in my 2010 27" iMac.

He instalado el sensor y funciona perfectamente. Muy fácil de poner y así ya me libro del software q me He dado cuenta q cuando he encendido el ordenador con el software automático me saltaban un poco los ventiladores . Ahora mismo con el cable y quitando el software se quitaron automáticamente. Hice test de hardware y sin problemas. Lo compre aquí mismo de segunda mano así q no fue tan caro. 35€ pero merece la pena para salvaguardar el ordenador q ya se me quemó la gráfica este año y ya da miedo.

If you are updating an old iMac to SSD you need this to stop the fans running at full speed all the time. The original HDD had an internal temperature sensor that the firmware uses to control fan speed. Just connect this between the new drive and the original SATA cable then stick the temp sensor on the outside of the new drive and it works great.
