The S9 was released to mixed reviews, its a small camera and has no EVF. But with no small lenses upon release... except an odd manual lens.Now with the 18-40mm the camera is very different sized system... Or even better the Sigma I series contemporary lenses. Image quality is excellent focus is fast and sure with both the 18-40mm and the 24mm Sigma lens. Video is also a very strong on this camera with 6K and 4K recording at various frame rates and very high data rates.As a small and compact full frame camera I think the results are awesome. This has now become my new holiday camera.

This is a beautiful camera. I have long been a fan of Lumix cameras. This is very compact, comparatively lightweight and is extremely good looking. I think it is extremely important to consider its market as much of its build, features, functionality and integration are focused of it. While it is a great camera generally when considering its use for social media, vlogging, editing in place, the synchronisation with a connected phone, ability to perform advanced combined preset configurations on the phone and ability to upload content quickly and easily it is quite superb.It doesn’t have a side grip, a flash, a hot shoe and also does not have a view finder or a second card slot. However, these don’t worry me as I appreciate the impact on size and I like the versatility of the digital screen. It is a camera that the more I used the more I can see the thought that has gone into both its use and design. It is a camera that is much easier to carry around and I love the feel of the camera when I am using it.The open gate mode, allowing the recording to either be used in portrait (9:16) or landscape (16:9) mode after taking video recordings is something I have really enjoyed. Although this does have impacts on how I frame the video I like the fact I can create a ready made social media version of something I would otherwise be doing twice.The menu system itself is very intuitive, easy to navigate, well grouped and well structured. Despite a wealth of features it is relatively easy to find what you need through the menus.It has excellent image stabilisation (again using the same technology as the S5 II) and this reduced my need for using tripods with longer exposures. The picture quality is excellent, having the same sensor as the S5 II and the colour representations really impressed me even with casual shots I was surprised just how good looking the photos are. Also when moving and video recording the image stabilisation was quite impressive.The video quality is quite superb and watching back on a large 4K TV, I was quite taken aback at just how vivid, sharp and colourful the images were.I love the integration of real time LUT (look up table) transformations allowing me to make both tone and colour changes directly to both photographs and videos directly on camera and the fact there is a dedicated button for this on the camera itself makes this extremely simple to implement. Quick presses allow you to cycle through the changes.The battery used in the S9 (DMW-BLK22) is the same as that used in many other models in the Lumix range. It has a capacity of 2200 mAh and I was impressed with its battery life.The LUT changes can also be applied in the excellent Lumix Lab app on the phone. Creating custom LUTs is also possible affecting a wide range of parameters. These can be applied to a video or photograph and then downloaded onto the camera for future treatments directly on the camera.The fact that you can layer LUTS and that up to 39 can be stored in the camera memory itself gives an wealth of ways of treating the pictures and video taken on the camera. I really like the fact that you can download LUTs from other content creators as well.The lumix lab app itself is a delight to use, with some deep features whilst remaining easy to use, understand and follow. The focus on seamless transfer of content made on the camera is also heavily appreciated making light of such work.This is an impressive camera and I love the on camera editing features, the high spec for its price. I love its relatively compact size, its focus on ability to quickly edit and upload content. This is a camera for me really built with a focus on convenience as well as specification. Its incorporation of features aimed at enabling the modern integrated use of the camera with social media and technology, whilst enabling powerful changes to be applied simply and easily makes this a fantastic camera in my opinion.It may not have all the very high end features professional photographers may desire but this allows a very professional polish to be applied to those seeking high end results in a relatively easy to use package, whilst still giving a wealth of features.
