I'm actually not a big fan of granny squares. I'm also not a fan of patterns where you really do need to pay attention to every single stitch. I try not to even be bothered with patterns, but when I do, I tend to pick patterns with repeating rows and not necessarily detailed stitch combinations. I do not like to be tied to a pattern every moment I am making something. So, honestly, I'm not even the right person for this yarn at all. I picked up this yarn without even really realizing it was intended for perfect flower granny squares. It was my intention to use the yarn for something completely different as I like trying interesting things with variegated yarn and this yarn comes in some interesting color combos.Nevertheless, once I became aware of how the yarn was designed, I decided to make a square to see how it would go. You probably already know this if you're considering this yarn, but It's absolutely critical that you get the gauge right or the colors don't line up and you don't get a perfect flower but instead get something like what I got with my first square (pictured) because I couldn't be bothered to go back and try to figure out where I went wrong. I actually went down to a 5mm hook instead of the recommended 5.5mm because it seems clear I like my stitches looser than the experts at Red Heart. I'm not entirely sure I'm going to use the whole ball for granny squares, but at the same time, now that I also know this isn't your typical ball of variegated yarn, I'm not sure how it would look used for some other project.BTW - I downloaded a PDF of the pattern from Red Heart's website, and I recommend this approach as it allows you to print it if you want it on paper or keep it digital if you prefer. Digital gives you the advantage of being able to make things bigger or smaller as needed.Anyway, if you've ever wanted to make flower granny squares but didn't want to be bothered buying all the right colors and then having remnants, this is your solution. Just be better at gauge and/or less lazy than I am.BTW - if you are interested in what it looks like to use this yarn in a typical 2-ball Tunisian crochet scenario, I have a photo of a few rows of TSS with Bluebell and Marigold for reference. The color changes are irregular as you'd expect since this yarn isn't intended to be used this way, but it produces an interesting result nevertheless.

I did two experiments with this self-coloring yarn. First, I made two flower squares according to the instructions on the inside of the label to make sure more than one could be made successfully. I also confirmed that the correct amount of tail it wants you to leave before making your slipknot is 4" of the interior color (yellow). I then made a regular granny square to see if it would color one properly, in case you wanted to add variety to your project or just weren't a fan of the flowers. It almost does, so it could probably be made to color properly by adjusting the tension in the first round or another method. The granny square comes out slightly smaller than the flower, but they're both very close to 6", so you could probably fix this with blocking. I've taken off a star because the yarn itself is fairly scratchy ands unpleasant against the skin. Maybe it will improve after a wash.

I am really happy with this yarn! I ordered "Rosy Disposition" and the colors are fantastic. This acrylic yarn is medium-width and very easy to work with.

My only complaint is that I feel that the thickness is slightly under the classified 'worsted weight', especially when compared to other worsted Red Heart yarns. I also do not think this is as fun as the granny square yarn (less color changes).Using the recommended hook size (5.5mm) I was able to complete the flower square in one try with no issues with having the colors line up. If your getting to the next color too quickly, go down a hook size. If your getting to the next color too late, go up a hook size. Also, this pattern is likely not for beginners, but it is included on the ball band and is both written and in a chart form.
