Review of Cognac glasses: When I first opened these I was very surprised to see how big they are - like little goldfish bowls! Before even using them I considered making a return because of the size borders on the absurd and perhaps slightly pompous. If you're looking to make a statement with your spirit stemware, these are for you!I am glad I did venture a try with a recently acquired vintage Armagnac, because I quickly came to understand that their large size is as much functional as it is aesthetic. Since a normal sized portion occupies a fraction of the glass, the bowl allows the aromas (bouquet, if you must) to blossom in the glass. This Armagnac had a wonderful, complex nose that was easily enjoyed from a few feet away, but being a vintage it wasn't blended and thus had a more prominent alcoholic element. The size of the glass was crucial in mitigating this because it's large size, and large rim, avoided concentrating the alcohol to the detriment of the other smells. I can attest that the difference between this and a tumbler I tried for comparison is dramatic.I therefore believe that these are worth the money if you enjoy drinking older brandies that will benefit from the design. They take time and care to clean. I will certainly be keeping them, despite the conspicuous size, for breaking out with special tipples. They are quite thin at the rim, and thus there will always be a risk of breakage.Overall, however, they appear sturdy and sparkling, especially for lead-free crystal. They are a touch overpriced at their current $60 list, so look to acquire at a discount. It's worth the wait for a good product.
