We planned on taking a trek down to Phoenix from Provo (and back) for Christmas with 7 people in the minivan. With luggage and winter gear, that doesn't leave much room in the van for everybody, much less presents! After looking around, I decided on this particular carrier (I actually saw it at Target.com under a different brand name and then searched for it on Amazon.com) due to it being the largest carrier I could find, being soft-sided, waterproof and reasonably priced (especially compared to some hard carriers). Before buying, though, I read the reviews here, especially in regards to it needing to be full. I was impressed the vendor took time to reply to a few comments and that the current version of the carrier resolves some of the older negative concerns (such as it not being waterproof before).Long story short, I was very pleased with it!:* It's absolutely huge - it held luggage for 7 people, a few pillows, blankets and even some kids sleeping bags.* "full up" - Because I had read about it needing to be full, I tried packing it as full as I could, but it's so big there were still a few empty spots in corners, between cases, etc... Generally speaking, though, it was as full as it could be for me to comfortably zip it up. We tied it down very tightly between the crossbars on my roof and pushed in the corners. We then drove from Provo to Las Vegas at 80MPH (there are several stretches in Utah where 80 is the legal limit, btw) in some pretty good wind. The case performed perfectly, didn't appreciably lower our gas mileage, didn't create any unbearable wind noise, stayed perfect stable (we did buy the mat to go underneath, but it wasn't really necessary) and was in perfect condition when we arrived in Vegas. After going down to Phoenix and finally back up to Provo (about 1400 miles, round trip), the case is still in great condition!* Weatherproof - we didn't get too much chance to put it to the test but the little rain we did get didn't get in the caseAll-in-all, we absolutely loved the case. It's easy to put up, holds a ton of luggage and was a great value. It was exactly what we needed for our trip! One note - if you do use the non-slip mat underneath, only use it under the back half (or so) of the carrier. We found once we hit certain speeds (especially since the speed limit is so high on I-15) that if any air got underneath the carrier at those speeds the mat would vibrate against the roof and would be incredibly loud.

This is very convenient for me. I travel a lot and don’t like to spend unnecessary money on a rent and/or a U-Haul trailer. It’s spacious and it’s a great protection for your items through rain.

I took the Rightline Gear Sport Jr. on a month long, 8,600 mile (13,840 km) trip across Canada and the US and it performed admirably. It was a great fit on my Toyota Corolla 2006 WITHOUT a roof rack (the next size up would have probably fit too, but this was more room than we needed). There were some epic rainstorms along the way and I can say that this bag is completely waterproof. Not a single drop of water got into the bag (the car on the other hand, I will explain below). The material is pretty heavy duty; I drove at normal speeds and just about every day would drag it off the roof, fully packed, slamming onto the ground. I made sure to only load it with large bags and had the same layout every time to speed things up. The front of the bag gets pretty littered with bugs after a while, but the rains washed most of it off by the time my trip was over.I didn't have a roof rack and was using the bag on the naked roof. I would wipe down the roof with a rag every time and I put down a non-slip mat. I didn't get the official non-slip mat which has terrible reviews. I went to a Dollarama and picked up a non-slip mat roll for less than $5 and it worked perfectly (I know because pulling the bag off the roof every time was fairly difficult with the mat on). The bag always felt secure and was still strong at the end of the trip. There are a few issues: the straps that come with the bag are WORTHLESS. You will notice in my included photos that I have straps purchased separately. Definitely head down to the hardware store and pick up some quality ratcheting straps for $20 or so. I also got 4 carabiners to use instead of the attached plastic loops which were too small, although, I don't think they were necessary. Tying the bag down tightly was probably good enough. It you want to risk using the included straps, please make a trial run before going on your actual trip to make sure it's enough for you. I was hoping the use the car clips but there was nowhere in my car to attach the clips. If you're thinking of using the car clips, run your fingers along the car door frame to see if there's somewhere the clips can latch onto (you don't want it latching onto the weather stripping). And speaking of weather stripping, even with the upgraded straps, if you're using it on a naked roof, it will affect your weather stripping. It was fine in light rain, but in heavy monsoons water would leek in pretty rapidly. Have a towel handy to shield your arm and pets when that happens. Another issue the straps against the weather stripping did also let in more wind noise and would vibrate pretty loudly if tightened just right, but was bearable.Even with the issue with the straps, I can't deny that this bag survived the entire road trip unscathed. It protected my gear and kept it perfectly dry. I'm definitely keeping this bag to use again on a future trip and I can thoroughly recommend it.

I searched for several different products and read many reviews before making the purchase. Overall, I was very pleased with it.I just finished a two week road trip across the United States starting in Tennessee and ended up in California. I drove a Toyota 4Runner. The PackRight Sport 1 Car Top Carrier was the perfect size for my truck. I could not imagine using it for a smaller car...I don't think it would have been efficient for anything but an SUV...but I see that others have used it for smaller cars. My truck has the rack above my car, so securing the car top carrier was not a problem. The straps provided were great at keeping it in tact. I also did not have to worry about lose ends flapping in the wind because I actually tied the excess straps down with some string. The PackRight carrier DID tear at one spot...near the front of the car...BUT, it was my fault. (I posted some personal photographs--you can see where the compression straps caused a hole to form.) The instructions clearly stated that it was not a good idea to line anything with corners or edges in the carrier. (I personally didn't know how to get around this as I was packing boxes.) In my carrier, I was able to fit three filing boxes (banker boxes) across the width without a problem, and even more smaller boxes to fill it up. The top of the bag does indeed expand but I don't recommend overpacking. The velcro strips that kept the flaps secure...for the most part...worked fine. I initially had expanded the carrier but did not want to risk water getting into it, so I took out some stuff. Two weeks on the road along the southern route of the US, it actually only rained a couple of times. When I was driving through Austin, I was on the interstate and the rain was pouring heavily for almost an hour straight. I was worried as I was driving through the storm, but figured if things got wet...well it would get wet. (Because I had smaller boxes loaded up top in it, I actually wrapped all of my boxes in garbage bags as a precaution. I would later realize at my final destination I didn't need to do that...but better safe than sorry.) When I was out of the rain storm, I checked all of my stuff the next morning and everything was fine, despite the small hole I created. The only reason the hole was created was because of the compression straps putting too much pressure on one of the corners of the boxes. All I did to fix it was opened up the carrier and used duct tape to tape an X over it, and I did the same from the outside. That was on the 3 day of my two week trip. From TN to CA over a period of two weeks, I had no problem with the car top carrier. The only reason I had to get access to it was because I wanted to repack some things...but other than that, it worked great. I had no problems with the extra straps flying around, no wind causing it to create unnecessary or unwanted sounds...all while driving at an average of 75-80mph across the US.I needed a car top carrier that was inexpensive, efficient, and effective. The PackRight Sport 1 Car Top met my needs and was great for my two week road trip across the US in my Toyota 4Runner. I bought the liner/mat that was suggested for it. I read some reviews that some people thought that you could get by without one...and you probably could, but it was only an extra 20 bucks and I went ahead and bought it and definitely thought it was the right choice. By the time I got to SF and unloaded, I could see clearly from the debris where I had used the liner. It definitely kept the car top carrier in its place...but besides that, it kept my car from getting beat up. The paint on the car is still very nice and I did not want to risk getting it scratched...so, the liner was an investment that was well worth its value.Owning an SUV, I will more than likely use the carrier again. It came with a carrier bag that makes it easy for me to store. I threw all of the straps and folded the carrier into it and I just left it in the back of my 4Runner. I was really pleased with the product and am glad to say that I had no problems with it. I would recommend this product to others. Cheers!
