Please read my fitting tips rather than make a mess. The video is useful but you need to be far more accurate than it suggests. I bought the nickel version but this applies to both.When choosing your fitting position, do consider whether one fixing or the other is going to catch your clothing or bag when walking through the doorway. I fitted mine just above head level so it won't be a nuisance, but of course that makes it less resistant to forcing. Mine's on a porch door where there's no high security requirement.Vertically, make absolutely sure the ball is central in relation to the other plate before you fit the ball part. Horizontally, you need the two plates separated by 15-17 mm, no more, no less. This includes any gap you have between door and frame, so you might be fitting quite close to the edges of your frame and door. But the good news is, you can reverse the slider plate (turn it through 180 degrees before fitting) so that you have only one screw near the edge, not two. It's a more robust way to fit it anyway, as the outer screws do all the work and the inner screw is only a locator. It also makes sense because the slider pivot is not central on the plate, it's a few mm to one side, so by reversing it you can fit it slightly further away from its partner plate. I reversed mine, and fitted them exactly 15 mm apart. As my door and frame aren't flush, I needed the plates slightly closer together than they would be otherwise.This catch is most suitable if your door and frame are flush. If your door is recessed, you'll have to build out your fixing position to make it flush. The catch will work if your door is proud of the frame by about 5 mm (mine is). If your door is proud you'll need to be particularly precise about positioning the parts. Don't drill all the holes in case you get it wrong, just drill the top one (I would never do it any other way in any case, it's far more accurate to tighten one screw and then drill through the remaining screw holes).And now for the CAT tips. If you've been looking for something to prevent someone opening your unlocked door and letting your precious cats out, as I have, this is is great! A security chain is too long, at full stretch cats can easily get through. But not with this. The opening is about 3cm. Paws fit through - heads don't.Somebody mentioned the slider has a spring to close itself - mine certainly doesn't.In security terms, this would resist a quick opportunist thief who doesn't want to make a noise. The fixings are reasonably substantial, especially for this low price, and the screws are the right length (three-quarters through my standard-depth wooden door) but their metal is a little soft. The overall look is good quality.The nickel finish on the fixings and screws is quite nice, though compared with my good-quality nickel door furniture, it's a little more towards steel colouring. Fitted at the top of the door, mine doesn't clash.If you take care, this is very easy to fit and use, and for the price, definitely worth five stars from me.

Generally the product looks and feels nice. It’s solid, weighty, and a nice brushed nickel-plated finish.But… my gripe with this (and the others like it) is that there’s so little tolerance for error and they don’t give you a template for fitting it. For the sake of, literally, a few pennies, they could include a paper, metal or plastic template with pinhole accuracy for perfect fixing hole alignment.It’s so easy to misalign by accidentally twisting one (or both) parts, getting the distance between them wrong, or one being slightly higher than the other. Plus, it’s extremely fiddly to hold them in place without slipping while marking the holes, bearing in mind you’re almost inevitably working in a confined corner space.For the sake of spending the extra 10p-20p, I’d happily pay it (and more) to avoid the irritation and consequences of getting it wrong. I’d highly recommend finding one that comes with a template, if you can find it!
