In regards to Japanese hand tools, I tend to get tunnel vision obsessing about the quality of steel. I own two high end kanna so I had my doubts when ordering this much cheaper one. The blade was in OK condition out of the box but didn't need too much work to achieve that mirror finish. Edge retention, while not as good as my more expensive planes, is not too shabby. Impressive really. Had to do the usual tuning to seat the blade correctly and ready the sole. Don't buy this if you're not willing to put in 1-2 hours worth of set-up. If you do have the patience and know-how to properly tune a Japanese plane then you won't be disappointed with this plane.

Really nice quality and once set up properly (check out lots of videos on YouTube or similar) makes light work of finish planing to an amazing finish. Well recommended.

So Satisfying in so many ways... Here's how impressed I am with this product: On receiving the plane I believe I observed the tiniest of cracks in the region where the iron slots into the body. In rushed my greediest consumer thought monkeys: "Return it! Return it!".. But as far as I could see it was the tiniest of cracks, so I thought why not fit the iron properly and take a whack at some shavings before I schlepp it back.. The iron was seriously tight in the body (which is where I'm thinking my miniscule crack might have come from). I beat on it for quite some time, released the iron and found it to be respectably sharp (but certainly no hairshaver) but more importantly imo the back was dead flat. I fitted the iron to the body properly (a bit, in a pilgrims fashion), took about an hour, started making paper out of a piece of alerce (!) .. and after a little tapping around on the plane, I'm extracting clean smooth full width shavings with thicknesses down into the .03 mm range, or roughly 1thou. I had high expectations of a japanese plane, properly tuned and sharpened etc. (and there are plent of positive recs on this one) but this exceeded all mine. I have no doubt I can tune the sole and sharpen the iron and start cutting some 20 micron tissue on this thing. I doubt I'll send it back. Whatever flaw this plane may (or may not have) it deserves a life in my shop. And that my friends is satisfying. Borrow my planing board but don't ask to borrow my plane. I gave 3 stars for ease of use because the plane arrives with the iron essentially sledged into the body, if you fumble that iron you're gonna bleed a bucket, and hey you tune it with a hammer. To recap, I'm at a loss as to how much respect this $50 tool deserves..

this purchase was a success. great beginner plane, comes exacltly the way its pictured. it needs some fine tuning before use, but the result is satisfying. There was enough of wood in the blade slot that i could trim it to a good fit and still have a few mm to hammer the blade in before it starts to show on the other side. the blade itself is quite hefty, its easy to sharpen and it takes a great edge. however, it came heavily cambered so i had to spend some time shaping the cutting edge to my liking. no need to hammer the ura however, there was enough of metal to support the cutting edge. the sole was flat with the area behind the blade ground a little lower so its not touching, like on a smoothing plane. i left it there for now but if you want it as a scrub plane youll have to correct this (although you spare some time not having to put a heavy camber on the blade). the mouth opening is ca 1.5mm which is acceptable.overall, a nice entry level plane, for those who want to try a different working style. also great for clamping in the vice to work upside down
