Was looking forward to it as a present for my mother, she is pleased so I am pleased.

Wie das wäre, ist dieser Film«, schrieb der Filmwissenschaftler Helmut Färber in seinem Kommentar zu »Singin’ in the Rain«. Es ist kaum zu glauben, aber es dauerte beinahe 39 Jahre, ehe ich diesen herrlichen Film — vielleicht nicht das beste, aber auf jeden Fall das populärste MGM-Musical der Fünfziger — am 1. Februar diesen Jahres zum allerersten Mal sah. Er hatte mich schlichtweg nie interessiert. Wirklich dumm von mir. »Singin’ in the Rain« ist perfektes Hollywood-Entertainment mit herausragenden Tanz- und Gesangsnummern, gut aufgelegten Schauspielern und einer originell-nostalgischen Story, welche sich an der Karriere Arthur Freeds orientiert, der einst als Pianör anfing und später an die 40 MGM-Musicals produzierte. Bis auf zwei Ausnahmen enthält »Singin’ in the Rain« ausschließlich Songs, die Freed und sein Kollaborateur Narcio Herb Brown für die unterschiedlichsten Filme geschrieben hatten. Das größte Plus von »Singin’ in the Rain« ist, dass er, im Gegensatz zu den meisten Musicals, seine Story ebenso wichtig nimmt wie die Musiknummern.Erzählt wird die Geschichte von Don Lockwood (Kelly) und seinem besten Freund Cosmo (O’Connor), zwei Vaudeville-Talenten, die im Hollywood des Jahres 1927 ihr Glück versuchen. Dem smarten Don ist Fortuna auch hold — gemeinsam mit der schrill-untalentierten Stummfilm-Diva Lina Lamont (Hagen) wird er ein erfolgreicher Star. Doch als sich mit großen Schritten die Neuerung den Tonfilms zu etablieren beginnt, müssen sich die Studiobosse mit der Realität konfrontieren, dass Linas grauenhafte Piepsstimme nicht für Sprechrollen geeignet und damit ihre Zeit als Filmstar vorbei ist. Cosmo jedoch hat die rettende Idee: Der sich gerade in Produktion befindliche Kostümschinken soll ein Musical werden, und das kleine Starlet Kathy Selden (Reynolds) soll Lina ihre Stimme leihen…Das Bild, welches Donen und Kelly von der Traumfabrik entwerfen, ist liebevoll ironisch, amüsant, oft parodistisch, aber immer voller Respekt. Die Art und Weise, wie Hollywood Illusionen erschafft, wird scharf entlarvt, um dann selbst die nächste Stufe der Verklärung zu erklimmen: Wenn Don der süßen Kathy seine Liebeserklärung macht, fährt er sie dafür ins Filmstudio und setzt dort alle technischen Finessen ein, um sie in ihren eigenen Liebesfilm zu entführen. Vor unseren Augen vervollkommnen sich die einzelnen Elemente aus Windmaschine, Scheinwerfern und Rückprojektionen zu einem romantischen Idealbild, wie es nur im alten Hollywood denkbar war. — Gene Kellys Choreographien sind auch nach über 60 Jahren noch beeindruckend. Das spielerische Temperament, gepaart mit tänzerischer Verve und ausgefeilter Perfektion — diese Mischung ist bis heute unerreicht. Hier harmoniert alles. Der Weg dorthin war hart, besonders für Donald O’Connor und die erst 19jährige Debbie Reynolds, die von dem egomanischen Kelly hart getriezt wurden, bis wortwörtlich die Füße bluteten. Reynolds meinte später, »Singin’ in the Rain« und die Geburten ihrer Kinder wären die schmerzhaftesten Erfahrungen ihres Lebens gewesen. Obwohl beide bis zum Schluss immer mit Hochachtung von Gene Kellys Können sprachen, arbeiteten Reynolds und O’Connor nie wieder mit ihm. Kellys Choreographien waren sehr auf Humor und Effekt ausgelegt und sportlich, ganz in der Tradition seines eleganten Vorbildes Fred Astaire. Gepaart mit Stanley Donens gutem Geschmack und Stilsicherheit von der Bild- und Farbkomposition über die Kostüme und die makellosen Studiobauten bis hin zu den brillant-sauberen Kamerafahrten wuchs »Singin’ in the Rain« zu einem stimmigen großen Ganzen zusammen.Die Dreharbeiten dauerten von Juni bis Dezember 1951. MGM butterte über 2,5 Millionen Dollar in den Streifen — damals beinahe ein Rekord! Als der Film im Frühjahr 1952 startete, mauserte er sich rasch zum größten Erfolg, den das Studio seit langem gesehen hatte. Es ist mehr als verwunderlich, dass »Singin’ in the Rain« nur zwei Oscarnominierungen erhielt: für die Beste Musik und verdientermaßen für die Beste weibliche Nebenrolle: Jean Hagen ist als hysterischer Filmstar einfach eine Wucht. Wenn man ihr Spiel sieht, weiß man, woher Lesley Ann Warren in Victor/Victoria und Jennifer Tilly in Bullets Over Broadway ihre Inspiration genommen haben. Heute gilt »Singin’ in the Rain« als einer der wichtigsten US-amerikanischen Filme des 20. Jahrhunderts. Was ist noch erwähnenswert? Cyd Charisse hat einen hammermäßigen Auftritt als Tänzerin, und die blutjunge Rita Moreno ist ebenfalls mit an Bord. Das Original-Negativ des Films wurde übrigens bei einem Feuer zerstört, so dass es schwierig sein dürfte, diesen wundervollen Film adäquat zu restaurieren. Wer »Singin’ in the Rain« nicht kennt, sollte dies nachholen. Ich jedenfalls bin sehr glücklich, dass mich mein lieber Freund Kevin Paul Stephens dazu überredet hat. (Schließlich bin ich eigentlich kein Musical-Fan.)

Poco da dire sul film, è il miglior musical della storia cinematografica. Per quanto riguarda il "cofanetto" ottima edizione inglese che a differenza di quella italiana, ormai fuori catalogo, si presenta con il bluray, il DVD zeppo di extra e in più un terzo disco che comprende la colonna sonora (CD audio). Il tutto arricchito da un booklet di 48 pagine. A breve uscirà la versione 4K che non presenterà il bonus disc e siccome il master sarà lo stesso del 2012 mi sono deciso di recuperare questa versione per sostituire il vecchio DVD. Consigliatissima

Warners has released many variations of the blu-ray version of "Singin in the Rain" across the various geographical regions. Every region has a single disc version and then there is an larger set with either 2 or 3 discs with additional special features and in some cases extra non-film content like an umbrella or a small hardback book with information about the film. It doesn't help when Amazon mixes up the various reviews for the different editions but I hope the following provide adequate information for UK purchasers.This set has the same disc contents as the US 3 disc Ultimate Collector's Edition with the exception of the umbrella, book and poster reproductions but at a quarter of the price and it goes one better - instead of the second dvd which is merely the film again in standard format, the UK set replaces this with a CD Soundtrack. France had a similar limited edition set with a hardback book and poster reproductions but again was much more expensive. The UK 3 disc set is the 'best value' version as it has all of the special features of the US Ultimate Edition including two feature length documentaries, other additional features and a soft-back version of the hardback book included in the US and French limited editions. The packaging comprises of a flimsy but adequate standard sized slipcase that houses the book and a UK blu-ray keepcase containing all the discs(1 blu-ray, 1 dvd and 1 CD).Apart from the wonderful film, the single best feature is the film-length documentary "Musicals Great Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM", about the unit responsible for some of the very best musicals in film history. There is also the new documentary "Singin' in the Rain: Raining on a New Generation" and the 2002 documentary "What a Glorious Feeling: The Making of Singin' in the Rain" as well as an audio commentary featuring Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Cyd Charisse, Kathleen Freeman, co-director Stanley Donen, screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green and others. All in all, those who can't afford or obtain the US Ultimate Collector's Edition or are smart enough to spend their hard-earned moola wisely will be completely satisfied with the UK 3 disc edition!There isn't much I can say about the film that hasn't been said before by better reviewers. This is one of the best musicals ever and I am certain anyone who likes musicals and movies in general will find much to enjoy and cherish. This is another 4K remaster from Warners but it just falls short of the picture quality of other 4K remasters such as 'Ben-Hur' and 'Casablanca' although this may be due to issues with the original elements as opposed to any failing with the new remastering. Most viewers will not even notice any flaws as the visuals looks stunning in HD and the colours are rich and vibrant. This is the best this film is going to look at this time and for the forseeable future so please do not hesitate to purchase the blu-ray if you really want it. The sound quality is simply excellent with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track that ensures audiences really get the full effect across the soundfield. You can hear the dialogues clearly as well as the lyrics.Usually we in the UK get short-changed with regard to features and packaging, and have to resort to importing from the US or other regions in order to get the features we deserve. This time we got the best deal, at least as regards the disc-based content. Yes, the packaging is not as good as the US Ultimate Collector's Edition or the French Limited Ed, but we have all the features at far cheaper cost...Enjoy!
