This matte box from small rig looks to be well built and functional, but it was just too heavy for my liking. I got this specially to use with my 24-70 but I’m not confident that this is light enough that it wouldn’t cause damage to the lens overtime. The vnd looked like it worked, but I never put it into the matte box when it was mounted to the lens.

I had been entertaining using a Matte Box for some time. I was on the fence as it adds considerable bulk and I was not certain the benefit outweighed the additional bulk and weight added to my travel kit. This Smallrig kit looked to be the most complete kit as it came with the filters that would allow me to achieve a range of ND stops without having to carry the larger 4x5.65 filters. This kit allows you to stack 95mm magnetic filters to acheive ND2-9 (+CPL) and comes with adapters for (4) common lens diameters (67-82). I rigged this up with my SONY FX-30 along with several accessories to deploy 15mm rods to provide additional support to the assembly so that not all the weight would be born on the lens threads.So is it worth the extra time it takes to rig this up... I think the answer is yes in some instances. I often shoot in less than ideal environments (trade show floor etc.) and the ambient lighting can create lens flares which has caused some issues in the past. This kit provides me more control over lighting that can hit the lens at an oblique angle causing flares. So it is good to have this as part of your kit but I would recommend using with a full 15mm rig to support the assembly. I might even consider picking up a few more magnetic 95mm Smallrig filters to add to the usefulness of this kit.

The kit comes with everything you need to get started, including common size filter adapters, making it incredibly versatile and beginner-friendly.What I Love:Durable and Well-Built: The materials and craftsmanship are top-notch, and the matte box feels professional and rugged enough for demanding shoots.Preserves Exposure and Clarity: The included CPL and VND filters maintain a balanced exposure while preventing glare and flares, all without color distortion. The high-definition glass and 22-layer coating are truly impressive and deliver sharp, vibrant footage.Quick and Hassle-Free Setup: The magnetic attraction design and quick-release system save time on set, while the modular design ensures everything is easy to adjust.No Vignetting: The matte box works well even with a wide-angle lens, eliminating vignetting when using a focal length of 16mm or more.Why It Lost a Star:The placement of the 4x5.65 filter insert feels limiting. Because of how close the insert is to the lens, there isn’t enough space to stack filters that protrude into the matte box housing. For instance, I couldn't use my Freewell magnetic ND filter system along with a 4x5.65 mist filter because the design doesn’t allow the extra room. While this may not be an issue for everyone, it reduces adaptability, which is a key feature for me.Final Thoughts:If your workflow doesn't involve stacking filters like mine, this kit will likely meet and even exceed your expectations. For others, however, the lack of flexibility in filter compatibility could be a deal-breaker. It’s a great matte box overall—just not completely thought through for certain setups.Would I recommend it? Yes, but know your specific needs and limitations before purchasing.Overall: Highly functional and well-made with minor adaptability issues.
