The absolute most important quality for a spade is its strength and this spade gets top marks from me for this. As with all tools, care must be taken not to misuse them, and as long as one doesn't deliberately try to snap this, it should last a lifetime. I am using it to turn over my garden to remove stones and bricks and it is practically pure clay which is probably the substance most likely to break a spade in normal use. As a new build property, the garden is also full of bricks which I have hit many a time with no damage to the spade. Indeed, I have noticed fragments of brick indicating that the spade has hacked pieces off the bricks I've struck. At other times, I have (inadvertently) attempted to lever up too much of the ground and felt the spade handle flex under the strain and then bounce back into shape where other spades would certainly have snapped.Not having used too many varieties of spade I don't really know much else to comment on. I have, however, read reviews that suggest that not all spades are kind on the hands or which have uncomfortable handles but this spade gave me no such problems at all. I used it in wet weather and it never slipped in my grip, I used it in hot, dry weather and my hands didn't blister.I'm not really one for drying and polishing spades after use to prevent rust; all I ever did was scrape it clean with my welly and stand it up in the shed and it's still in perfect nick despite having been used in rain.

Meine lange Suche hat ein Ende. Unser Grundstück, ca. 10000m2 wird von mir auf Grundlage der Permakultur umstrukturiert. Für diese Arbeit habe ich nun mehrere Spaten ihrem frühzeitigen Ende zuführen dürfen. Angefangen bei Billigspaten, bei denen das Blatt recht schnell abknickte landete ich bei Fiskars. Der Spaten brach an der Schweißnaht. Also neu schweißen lassen und weiter gings, bis kurz darauf der Stiel abbrach. Also kam der nächste Fiskars. Der hielt nicht einmal einen Bruchteil der Zeit bis auch bei ihm das Blatt an der Schweißnaht brach. Nun sollte definitiv etwas besseres her. Also kaufte ich einen Baack Spaten Holsteiner Rüffel handgeschmiedet für 71,60 Euro. Dieser Spaten hielt genau drei kurze Einsätze. Bei dem Versuch einen kleinen Brennnesselstrauch auszugraben, brach der Stiel, bei geringer Belastung. Da hat jeder Billigspaten besser durchgehalten. Was hilft ein handgeschmiedeter Spaten, wenn der Stiel eine Schwachstelle ist. Obendrein ist er genietet, also nicht ohne weiteres austauschbar. Der Service war jedoch klasse. Der Spaten konnte ohne Kosten zum Austausch des Stiels zurückgesendet werden. Nun zum Spear & Jackson. Dieser Spaten ist absolute Spitzenklasse. Handgeschmiedetes, sehr großes Blatt, kurzer, kraftvoller Stiel. Der kleine Kraftprotz liegt super in der Hand und es macht einfach Freude mit ihm zu arbeiten. Mich wundert es, wie solch eine Qualität für so einen geringen Preis möglich ist. Alle Spaten schlägt er locker in Sachen Haltbarkeit und Verarbeitung. Er ist einfach durchdacht. Der Versand war blitzschnell. Ein Kauf, der mich wirklich sehr positiv überrascht hat.

This spade is a pleasure to use and feels like it will outlive me. I got my last one from a DIY chain store and it didn't cost much and lasted a few years but has just bent in the middle and is useless. I didn't have the money at the time to get a better one but the build quality on this one is so good that I don't think I'll ever have to replace it. I wish I had been able to get this on in the first place. Top quality. I'm a Chartered Engineer and have worked as a quality controller in engineering workshops for over 20 years. Before that I was a landscape gardener. An easy 5 Stars from me.
