This is a fantastic little tool that will easily cut through branches on small and medium sized trees and shrubbery. The size is ideal when you have a small space to work in. My wife has used it more than I have and suggested we get another one as a back up which was the reason for buying this again.Simple and really effective to use and after over a year of a lot of use - it's still sharp and as effective as the first day.Great product, really effective and at a good price.

Ordered two of these - one each for my wife and me. Didn't use them immediately so lost the return window. They both had virtually no set on the teeth so started binding quickly. Despite the "High performance carbon steel cutting blade", they did not seem as sharp as our old tired pruning saws. I thought this was because they were binding so I tried to improve them by resetting the teeth. That solved the binding problem, but it showed up how inefficient the cut was. Spear and Jackson and Kew Gardens both once had impeccable reputations. In this case it seems their standards and recommendations are worthless. Two brand-new saws are headed to the charity shop.

The photos are 'before' and 'after.'It took about half an hour to cut up this large branch which had come off one of my trees.Sawing the bits up to a thickness of about 4 inches, (10 centimetres) is pretty quick. 4 inches or more takes longer. You do need to apply sone pressure and it cuts more on the pull towards you strokes. It us very easy to hold with a rest for your thumb to enable pressure to be put on. Obviously not as quick as an electric one but very handy and light. Ideal for someone like me, an older woman. It folds up in a two step procedure which ensures you don't accidentally cut yourself. That is a very good safety feature.I bought this because I am slightly nervous about using an electric one, and this one is really light. It will help me to keep my garden pruned.

Do a fair bit of shrub and hedge trimming and thought I'd try this saw due to the number of 5 star reviews. If you've never used one of these type of saws they are excellent for pruning and trimming. Small, light and sharp they are far superior to the old bow saw and can replace loppers. Once folded they are safe and easy to store in a pocket. Easy and nimble to use they cope with substantial branches with ease. You have to remember these saws follow the Japanese custom of cutting on the pull stroke. However, my usual pruning saw is a Silky F-180 which at around double the price is well worth the extra. The blade is much sharper and easier to pull, the handle more comfortable, the locking mechanism better and spare blades are easily available. If you have a smaller garden then this Spear and Jackson is fine, superior to others I've tried in the same price range, and is good value for money. But if you're going to use the saw often then it is worth paying more.
