Deze schaaf doet mij denken dat het een product is van heel ver gaande automatisering.Alles is met grote precisie vervaardigd en in elkaar gezet.De componenten waar deze schaaf uit opgebouwd is moeten zo van de productielijn, zonder verdere nabewerking, zijn geassembleerd om kosten te besparen.Dit betekent dat de koper allerlei bewerkingen zelf nog moet uitvoeren voordat hij een apparaat in handen heeft dat echt schaaft.Het betekent ook dat, als hij dat goed heeft gedaan, hij een heel goed bruikbaar en een in mijn ogen zelfs mooi, stuk gereedschap in handen heeft voor een belachelijk lage prijs.De noodzakelijke bewerkingen zijn:Het weg vijlen van de felsranden, die zich op het handvat en de knop bevinden.Dit zijn de over het algemeen vrij scherpe overblijfselen van het onder grote druk en hoge temperatuur op elkaar persen van twee kunststof delen tot 1 artikel.Om een heel mooi ogend handvat te krijgen is het daarna noodzakelijk het handvat en de knop te schuren met ontzettend fijn schuurlinnen.Het resultaat is dan bijna niet van hout te onderscheiden, oogt daarnaast ook nog eens heel fraai en is ook nog eens veel beter bestand tegen stoten dan hout.Vervolgens moet de beitel onder een hoek van 25% geslepen en gewet worden.De beitel is bij aankomst al wel heel grof op 25% gebracht, maar van enige scherpte is dan nog geen sprake.Om het geheel af te ronden moeten de zool en de opstaande kanten met schuurlinnen bewerkt worden.Bij aflevering zien deze er m.i. al wel heel mooi uit, maar moeten een bewerking hebben ondergaan die met grote kracht uitgevoerd is, waardoor het oppervlak wel mooi vlak is, maar stroef aanvoelt.Als laatste bewerking raad ik iedereen aan om alles goed tegen roest te beschermen.Zelf doe ik dat al vele jaren door de belangrijke delen, zoals schroefdraad en dergelijke, goed in te smeren met kogellager vet.Het is mij in de praktijk gebleken dat dit de beste bescherming oplevert.Zelfs na tientallen jaren ziet het ermee beschermde oppervlak er nog uit alsof het zo uit de winkel vandaan komt, een echte aanrader.De Stanley 4 en een half is overigens wel een bijzonder zware schaaf in gewicht en je moet daarom wel over een aardig handje kracht beschikken om deze in de praktijk met plezier te hanteren.Maar, als je daarover beschikt en je voert de hierboven beschreven handelingen op de juiste wijze uit voordat je ermee aan de slag gaat, heb je een goed en mooi Een stuk gereedschap in handen dat je hele leven mee zal gaan.

Wenn man die nötige Erfahrung, ein Minimum an Austattung hat und 2 Stunden Zeit reinsteckt kann man sich hieraus ein sehr funktionstauglicher und vertrauenswürdiger 4-1/2 Hobel erschaffen.Plastikgriffe naja muss man für diesen Preis in Kauf nehmen. Von scharfen Kanten an den Plastikgriffen hab Ich jedoch nichts gemerkt, die sind im Hochglanz gut verarbeitet. Klar wenn man leidenschaftlich ist kann man sich Holzgriffe nachbauen oder neue oder benutzte kaufen, hab Ich alles schon früher gemacht, rein funktionnell muss dies aber nicht sein.Ich hab nach 2 Stunden Arbeit die gleichen zufriedenstellenden Resultate und Spass mit diesem Hobel erreicht als mit den beiden Stanley und Record 4-1/2 vintage Hobeln die Ich nach viel mehr Stunden Arbeit restoriert hab.Es ist trotz Plastikgriffe noch immer ein Stanley mit dem man Vertrauenswürdigkeit und sehr gute Resultate erreichen kann die man mit billigeren Silverlines etc. sogar mit viel Nacharbeit garantiert nie erreichen wird.Das einzige was man Stanley generell vorwerfen kann ist das sie nicht genug Alternativen von neuen traditionelle hochwertigere Hobel von allen Grössen und Arten auf den Markt bringen welche wie z.b. Stanley sweethearts oder richtige Premiums sofort out-of-the-box einsatzbereit sind selbst wenn diese teurer wären.Es gibt für Stanley mittlerweile wohl zuviel Konkurrenz nach unten mit all den billigen asiatischen Modelle und nach oben mit den Veritas, Lie Nielsen und Woodriver um da noch eine rentable Niche zu erstellen.

If you take time to set this plane up, sharpen the iron (although it was pretty sharp out of the box), and use it with care, it will reward you with beautiful smooth wood. Don't expect to be able to use this or any plane without doing the right work in getting it set up. Most bad reviews I see are from people who don't bother, but expect the world. This plane is very nice indeed.

Lo primero, soy un aficionado y este es mi primer cepillo. Partiendo de esto os puedo decir que me ha gustado mucho. Tiene varios pequeños defectos pero a mí parecer todos corregibles, es cuestión de ir afinando la herramienta poco a poco. Viene con un manual de instrucciones donde te explica cómo poner a punto la herramienta.Lo primero que tienes que hacer es afilar el hierro a sus 25° como viene de fábrica, yo use una buena piedra de grano 1000/4000 y luego le creé un microbisel a 30°, con lo cual el hierro quedó muy bien a mí parecer, después de montarlo todo y probar con un listón de pino me lo pasé pipa sacando viruta jajaja.En un futuro pienso rectificar la base para que quede como un espejo y deslice mejor. La perilla y la empuñadura son de plástico y no me gusta la sensación que dan, creo que eso también tiene fácil solución haciendo unas de madera.El envío muy bien, y rápido.En conclusión me gustó, creo que está bien fabricado y pesa lo justo, lo volvería a comprar.

I'm not writing this and comparing it to a Lie-Neilsen or Veritas because if you're trying to, you live in a fantasy world. There's a reason why this is less than a third of the cost. Even the pre-WWII version had to be fettled and finished to your working specifications. At the price point, which is what's important here, these planes are fantastic. You may have to flatten the sole, you will have to lap it no matter the maker without spending $250 or more... Adjust the frog to your liking, flatten the back of the blade, hone the iron. So many people complain about the iron not being razor sharp from the factory yet even Lie-Neilsen, you still have to hone the iron... This isn't a new thing. Learn to true up your tools and properly sharpen your irons because you're going to have to do it regularly to keep it functioning properly and you'll be happy with your tools. These are skills you have to have to be a woodworker and always have been.Okay enough ranting. The casting and machining is well within acceptable tolerances and the iron is properly ground to 25 degrees. All I had to do was lap the sole, adjust the frog to smoothing tolerance, three minutes to flatten the back edge and then about four minutes to hone the cutting edge to around 30 degrees and razor sharp. All the same things I had to do to all of my other planes and I get shavings that I can put on the page of a book that I can read through.There is a decent amount of backlash in the depth adjustment but again, at the price point that's normal and acceptable. If two extra seconds of spinning a wheel with your finger are that big of a problem, remake the parts or spend a lot more money to have tighter tolerances.The only real annoyance is the "plastic" tote and knob but they are easy to replace even without a lathe. Plenty of Youtube videos show you how to make new ones from hardwood and you can either make a template from the existing tote and knob or print out templates from many sources online. The other option is to go to ebay or a few other sources and either find originals or buy from someone that makes them. I prefer to make my own so I can shape them to my hands directly.It's nice that you can order from Amazon UK now since you can't directly order the 4 1/2 in the US. Mine took about a week to arrive and was well packaged with no damage or even scratches. A good buy for a new tool and it was a lot cheaper than finding a vintage one from ebay.

what i received was what I expected. the sole was relatively flat and only needed a little lapping. once i honed the blade and chipbreaker it was ready to use. if it had hardwood handles i would have given it 5 stars. but those plastic handles are terrible. they will need to be replaced. other than that there is nothing like a bailey plane, especially at this price point.
