It's a gadget, but a well-made and well-designed one. The magnets are extremely powerful and articulating, so they can adapt to a variety of flat and curved surfaces. The spring is strong enough to hold light pieces in place, without actual clamping. Those magnets are situated several inches away from the contact tip, but you should make sure to keep them away from heat.The company makes a less expensive version with only a sharp tip, but I think the reversible (flat/sharp tip) model is much more versatile.It's a tool that you don't realize you need until you use it.
