I have mixed opinions about this camera. There are some good points and some bad points. On the good side, it is a brilliant idea: a cheap (by astronomy standards) camera with wifi and live imaging via an app, with images that are saved to a removable transflash card. It's extremely well built. Construction is solid and all metal, yet compact and light. It comes with a couple of barrel extensions, although I found I needed to add a barlow barrel to get enough back focus on some instruments. There's a built in, although removable, IR filter that protects the sensor from dust and moisture as well as cutting out some unwanted light pollution. The dedicated app is simple to use, although I could have done with a few more detailed instructions. A bit of trial and error soon makes it clear what the app is doing though. It's capable of taking amazing photos of the sun and the moon, even on a very cheap scope. I found some of the images to be quite stunning. I've tried to attach a couple. This could be an absolutely fantastic product. Unfortunately there are some really major downsides. The first, and biggest downside, is the physical size of the sensor. OK, that's going to be a major contributor to cost, so it's perhaps understandable. Nevertheless it means that any image is severely cropped, resulting in an apparently large magnification and consequently tiny field of view. Even with a fast f5 scope I can't get the whole of the sun or the moon in a single image. Objects like the Andromeda galaxy are a complete non starter.I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to astrophotography, but I have managed to take a few half decent snaps over the years. Yet I struggle to get decent deep sky images out of this camera. Even the Orion nebula, probably the single easiest deep sky object to image, never seems to come out quite right. There seems to be a purple tinge to everything. Of course you can compensate for this in the dedicated app by reducing colour saturation and increasing the green bias, or you can adjust the colours afterwords, but it still seems to be difficult to get the colours just right. The app itself seems to have a couple of problems. If the screen saver kicks in while it's connected it doesn't always maintain a live connection. Sometimes it seems to lose live updates even without the screen saver. I still haven't figured out what causes this. The only solution I've found is to force the app to close and restart it.Then there are some major, unforgivable shortcomings in the software. The biggest is that it only saves jpegs. This is really unacceptable in an astrophotography camera and there's no excuse for it. It may well be why it struggles with deep sky imaging. There is plenty of open source, lossless, image manipulation code out there.Next, it doesn't save any meta-data. If you spend the night experimenting with different gains and exposures then you had better keep very detailed written notes about what you do, because the software doesn't save any of this information. This is really, really, basic stuff. These software fixes should be quite simple. Svbony have promised to look at them, but so far there's been no timescale about when we might expect some updates.Which leaves me wondering if I'm going to keep this device. I really want to love it. But, even at this price, if I can only photograph (part of) the sun and the moon, then I have to wonder if it represents good value for money. With regret, I'm probably going to send it back.
