I'm actually using this as a practice pad stand on the boat. I'm 65 so opening this brought a wave of nostalgia for a simpler, and lighter, time before the my hardware is beefier than yours wars of the 80's. I notice most of the hardware lines are adding retro and lightweight design levels to their offerings.Okay, in use: simple, simple, simple. Skinny tubes, wing nut, not memory locks and a toothed tilter. The tripod doesn't have a stop to keep the center post off the ground and this makes the stand feel REALLY tippy. I fixed that and notice that you can lift the collar to make the 3 legs a little less flat which can narrow the profile a bit if you need the room. With my practice pad, an 8 inch Vic Firth, I can't find a truly flat setting with the tilter. I don't know if it's the pad or the set of the teeth on the gears but it's a noticeable few degrees out. In practice it's not a bother to me. Equally, the stand feels wobbly if I wiggle it by hand but in use, hitting the pad with sticks it's not a negative effect. I'm not sure about how I'd feel about it with a 22 inch ride cymbal or for a heavy hitter but the boat is not near my regular kit and I might just too lazy to try to remember to bring the stand home to try it out. For my use as a practice pad stand where weight and stowage were the main requirements, I feel like I chose well. It's good to stay with the classic brands, they usually don't dissapoint. I have pearl, tama and yamaha stands that all work just fine at 30 years old.
