The Host

'The Host' is one of my favourite movies. Often described as 'Gojira' meets 'Little Miss Sunshine', this is one of those movies that's difficult to categorize.In 2000, an arrogant American scientist orders his Korean assistant to dump all of the expired formaldehyde into the sewer, and all of the toxic waste goes into the river.Six years later, the product of the chemical waste, a mutant creature the size of a bus, starts chasing and eating people. Two men arrive on the scene to help. One is Donald White, an American soldier living in Seoul with a Korean girlfriend. The other man is the protagonist, Park Gang-du.Gang-du is one of the most unique heroes in cinema. He is the clumsy, slow-witted eldest son of a working class snack vendor, and he has a neurological condition which gives him social ineptitude and mild narcolepsy. He also has a teenage daughter, Hyun-seo and he only seems to be wide awake when his fatherly instincts kick in.When Gang-du accidentally causes Hyun-seo to be carried off by the monster, he, his frazzled father, his alcoholic brother and his hesitant archer sister all take her for dead. But one night, Gang-du gets a call and finds that she's still alive.Unfortunately, no one believes him and continuously treat him as insane, so he and his family take it into their hands to try and save her.Meanwhile, down in the sewer where she is trapped by the monster, Hyun-seo, growing in courage, fights to survive.This movie has everything: action, comedy, family drama, political and social satire, and strong central characters. It's beautifully filmed, and director Bong Joon-ho really knows how to use colour in his film.If you are autistic like me or have any other special needs, you can definitely relate to Gang-du, who despite his social problems has a massive heart.The acting is excellent. Byun Hee-bong is an actor I like to call the Korean Takashi Shimura, in looks as well as in ability. Song Kang-ho is wonderful as always in the role of Gang-du, and so are his co-stars, Ko Ah-sung, Park Hae-il and Bae Doo-na. Yoon Je-moon is near unrecognizable as a vagrant. And it's got a cute small boy, too.Bong Joon-ho's quality as a director varies wildly, but I think this film is his best. It will make you laugh, cry, scream and cheer with delight.

This is a fantastic movie - it has everything going on for it. The tone is pitch-perfect, and surprisingly endearing...it is truly the family that makes this film shine; despite, yes, the best -classic, already- movie monster chaos since the original JPark came out. It was certainly the best audience reaction I have seen at an event movie since JPark - people were cheering for the family, and going nuts at the scary parts. And it IS scary - quite a bit. Better than most, by a long shot. Now...I am not one for humor in horror films...and going in knowing that the advertising campaign for this hit was aiming a bit for the comedy angle - the comedy in this film is fantastic. It's a bit over the top - but not TOO, like some trailers suggest. It's in small doses, is well done, and mainly it's to keep the focus and involvement with the family - and once you see the film, and are part of the charm of the actors for two hours, you understand the hype over the appeal of the characters. They ARE us. For a slacker who came out of the Grunge scene - I felt the lead actor was dead-on, and you connect with his despair. As a matter of fact, all the actors are just perfect for their parts in The Host. The warm moments are very genuine. A very pleasant surprise - and just as important a reason to see this movie as The Host itself..!! Everything you've heard is true - the monster is terrific. The fact that the director had the monster show up in the first 15 minutes in broad daylight sets the bar for the rest of the film's manic action. The beast is a mean one - and the monster itself just absolutely ROCKS. I loved watching this scary creature! The pure excitement that The Host infuses is remarkable. These scenes are the best in the business, hands down. Excitement, and adventure. This is a 5 Star movie. It is smart, honest and extremely well realized - it is not merely up to par with Hollywood movies...it surpasses Hollywood movies. This one will be around for a long time. It is a major event movie - especially for genre fans. It was nice to go to a show and see the audience get all riled up like they did for Jaws - people just went nuts for it, it was a breath of fresh air for a life-long monster enthusiast.

J'avais vu pas mal de parties de ce film sans jamais l'avoir vu en intégral. J'adore les films asiatiques. J'ADORE. Ma collection augmente grace à Amazon sinon où trouver des films asiatiques!!!! Peut être qu'il en faudrait plus en français ou avec sous titre car beaucoup de films m'interesse sur le site d'Amazon mais pas de langue française ni sous titre, MINCE!!!! Peut être que cel viendra. Pour parler de Host, ce film est somptueux pour ma part. Hallucinant! Tentée de rire parfois puis à chaque fois comme par surprise la minute d'après un drame arrive. le naturel des acteurs dans ce film est éblouissant. Tos les acteurs sont hyper doué, même les petits rôles et cela dans tous leurs films. Il est vrai que Song Kang-ho est fantastique comme acteur. Un véritable passe partout. "Mémory of murder", "Thirst" que je dois visionner, "Parasite"," le bon, le brute, le cinglé" tourné comme un cow boy déjanté wow! "Sympathie for mr vengeance" génial! Pour ne citer qu'eux. Ravie , ravie, ravie
