SEAFRONT Portable Mini ThereminThe Seafront Mini Theremin comes simply but well packaged in a sturdy cardboard box. Inside the box are the Theremin, a USB connection cable, two antennas and a very brief instruction sheet.Straight out of the box I plugged in the antennas and a 1/8-inch audio cable to my mixer. I connected the Theremin to a USB power brick turned it on and it sprang to life.It is important to fully extend the antennas because the theremin automatically calibrates when it starts, if they aren’t extended you won’t get the full range of notes. The first important task is to set the instrument menus to your preferred language, in my case, English. The right button switches the screen to the menu, the top and bottom buttons navigate up and down, right button selects the item which is then altered by the top and bottom buttons. The left button returns to the display screen.Here many of the more commonly needed functions are available from the compact but quite high-definition screen using just the four buttons below to navigateIn most instances, the left antenna controls the volume while the right one controls the pitch. But when you choose an instrument like a piano or guitar, the antennas work slightly differently. The right one still selects the pitch or note while the left one kind of ‘plucks’ it when you move your hand away.The included instruction sheet has only the basic information about setting up and using the theremin. However, I found an abundance of tips and tricks online by simply searching for “Mini Theremin”.I wasn’t expecting very much from the Mini Theremin, especially having read some reviews but I have been pleasantly surprised by how good it is.Please don’t believe the negative comments left by some people, once you spend a little time getting to know the instrument, it may surprise you too.
