Productdetails

  • Pre90 keurt volledige evenwichtige structuur goed.

This little preamp is absolutely great if what you're looking for is an almost perfect connection of your source signal to your power amp. The base unit has limited connection options but they fit my requirements nicely. One is a fully balanced XLR input, the other single-ended RCA. So in my case, I have an iFi Zen DAC V2 with a balanced 4.4mm jack that I connect to the XLR input to the Pre90 with a really nice iFi cable. Less expensive options are available but this one is very good. Then I have a turntable with a built-in phono stage which provides a line level output that I connect to the RCA jacks on the Pre90. You can select either one either with presses on the Pre90 multi-function front panel button or with the supplied remote control (this way is much easier). The Pre90's output is either fully balanced XLR or single-ended RCA. My NAD C298 amp has balanced XLR inputs so I used that. You don't get left-right balance controls or treble-midrange-bass adjustments but I never use those. If you're playing from a high quality source and you have good speakers, you don't need them anyway. If you need more inputs, Topping sells an expander module that costs $250 which gives you 4 more XLR and 1 RCA inputs. If you need to select from different sources and you want to be able to adjust the volumn of each one then this little $600 jewel is all you need. Highly recommended!

Have had this for a while now so I feel like I can give an informed review. I actually wish I could return this just because of the remote. You have to be within 5 feet in front and 1.5 feet to the left or right. If they'd have made the remote in the shape of a gun it might make it more fun to try to turn the volume up and down. There are so many options these days for gear it's hard to know what to buy. I bought this because I read tons of great things about it. The remote was the first clue that I made the wrong purchase. Where do I get my information/reviews on what gear is great? YouTubers/blogs/forums. What do all these people do a lot? Sit at a computer. How often do I sit at a computer? Never. This preamp is for someone who sits very near their equipment, like a YouTuber. I have this in my listening station/home gym. It's annoying to have to walk all the way up to the pre to turn it up. I've given up on the remote. Also I dropped it once and it literally exploded into 12 pieces. It works but it's all taped and gooey. The damn thing sounds great tho. So transparent it might as well not even be there. It has absolutely no functionality besides plugging in XLRs or RCAs. Now I wish I got something with more functionality. Like I said in the title, it's ok I guess.

Been shopping around for a preamp but it was no easy task. My criterias for the preamp are:1) has good audio qualities such as clean, transparent, detail, correct tonal, dynamic and wide sound stage;2) provide at least 8dB gain to input signal to maximize equipment matching;3) remote control;4) cost less than $1K.The Topping pre90 matches all the above criterias. So i ordered one from Amazon. After operating the Topping pre90 for 1 month, my conclusion is that the Pre90 is exactly what its advertised.Pro:It produces a very clean, detail, agile, dynamic and reasonably wide sound stage. Background noise is almost zero...this could be reason why it is so dynamic, sort of like "high contrast". The 10dB gain from RCA output is plenty...so that i can reduce input level from my DAC to reduce distortion, which is good.Con:The remote is not sensitive and need to be pointed directly at the unit for it to respond.Sound wise, i wish it has more body...maybe i am too used to tube sound as i have been listening to tubes for many years. So the pre90 is best pair with a tube amp. I paired it with the Fosi Audio ZA3 and Magneplanar 1.7i and found the sound a bit too light (lack body).
