My old laptop broke down and wasn't worth spending money on. Took the hard drive out and bought this 'caddy'. Now I use it as an external hard drive with all my saved files on. Very good value. Easy to use. Recommended.

I gotta tell UGREEN and all their customers that it would benefit the buyers to have a set of instructions about setting up this hard drive enclosure. I will help with these instructions because I work with computers (Macs and Pcs). Some people dont differentiate between a Mac (macOS) and a PC ( Windows OS). ON Mac a hard disk has to be formatted using the Disk utility application. For Windows people can use Command line as admin, or - Create and format hard drive and disk partitions - native application, that is already installed on any Windows OS.I used this UGREEN enclosure to install Windows 10 Education OS on it, in order to boot up an HP notebook from it , which had only a 32GB eMMC type of internal hard drive. Thus I had to make this drive bootable , but before making it bootable, it has to be formatted. In order for your SSD or HDD hard drive to be detected by a PC, it needs to be formatted by running a few commands in CMD (or by using Create and format hard drive and disk partitions - program in Windows), and these are the steps for the CMD (command line option):1. Open Command Prompt (with admin rights) by pressing the Windows logo key and the X key simultaneously.2. Choose Command prompt (Admin) from that dropdown menu.3. After it opens up , wait for a few seconds , then type : diskpart4. Then type : list disk5. Then find the hard drive that you need from the list displayed6. Then type : select disk 1 (for example ) if 1 is the disk you need to format7.Then type : clean (it will say that operation was completed successfully)8. Then type : convert GPT ( in case you have a BIOS type UEFI ) or convert MBR ( if you have a Legacy BIOS)9. Then type : create partition primary10. Then type: format fs=ntfs quick11. Then type : assign letter V ( or any letter you choose that is not used by other drives)This last step is very important because otherwise the computer WILL NOT DISPLAY THE HARD DRIVE on your screen. Some enclosures might be defective sometimes (but it's probably rare), or it might take 5 minutes to display your drive (after formatting it) IF YOU HAVE only 4GB or less of RAM in your computer. It takes memory to display devices faster (to compute the information). The steps above are meant to format a drive using the NTFS file system. If you wanna use it as a storage device you need to type : format fs=exfat quickOr if you need to format it as Fat32 type : format fs=fat32 quickStorage drives usually are formatted as exFat.Bootable drives are formatted as NTFS.In order to create a bootable drive you'll need to use Rufus to burn the ISO on the drive, and it can only work with Windows 10 Enterprise or Education (to create Windows to Go).Other than that your Windows PC (regardless if it's 10, or 8.1 or 7) should recognize the hard drive once you formatted it and you assigned a drive letter to it ( so it can be displayed on your screen).Make sure that your buy and SSD MX500 if it's a regular laptop drive. Older HDD drives might be defective, and so it's not always the enclosure's fault.Hope this helps. God bless!
