Oil pastels are a nightmare for storing and framing as they never cure completely, but they useful in the tool kit! I sometimes use them on paintings (both oil & acrylic) and thought I'd try this to seal one of those paintings. It worked great. I actually used it over a completely cured oil painting too & seems to have worked fine. Gave a nice finish & enhanced the painting.

This is basically a water-based acrylic varnish. Maybe it has some extras that make it tailor-made for oil pastels. (The manufacturer is kinda vague about what's in it.) It dries pretty quickly and evenly. There's no major shift in color. The only downside is that if you have any major lumps on your surface, you'll need an extra coat or two.If I could improve this product, I would include some UV protection since oil pastels are iffy in terms of lightfastness.

Works great for oil pastels. I’ve tried it on Paul Rubens and Mungyo oil pastels, and both worked well (Mungyo worked better because Paul Rubens oil pastels are creamier, which resulted in a thicker and bumpier layer). I also poured about 15 ml of the varnish into a small bottle and mixed in a few drops of water to make it last longer. It dries very quickly — much faster than the stated one hour — but I use oil pastels on sketch paper, so that might be why. For uneven areas or bumps, you might need to apply additional layers.

This varnish works very well with one thin coat applied using a sponge brush. It creates a clear satin finish and does not noticeably alter the colours or value of the painting. It is much easier to use than a spray varnish or fixative.Note:- The final finish is smudge proof and water proof but it is not scratch proof.- If you apply the varnish using a slightly damp sponge brush, it reduces lines in the final finish.- Applying this varnish to water soluble oil pastels like Neocolor II or Mungyo Aquarelle brands will cause smearing.

This is great varnish but even Talens don't know how to use it. Good job I do!
