I was looking for a gym shoe and have never wore Vibram Five Fingers before but knew they might be an option sooner or later. After reading the benefits of having a natural gait and not having a raised heel on a shoe from the biomechanist blog writer Katy Bowman et al, I spent about 8 months of progressively stepping down my heel height in fitness shoes and have been in ‘minimalist’ footwear with a 0” toe-to-heel drop for about a year now. I was wearing Inov-8’s Bare XF 210 V1 but the outsoles have worn out recently. I really liked them but they did not give my toes a glove-type functionality. I do CrossFit but also like to go to the Y for Yoga, TRX, etc. I’m too much of a wimp to go completely barefoot and so I finally looked into Vibram’s.The KSO Evo’s are all around the best fit, feel, and look for me. I feel like my feet are wrapped in an armored sock in which I can move all parts of my foot in. They are very responsive to the ground and the traction on them are super sticky. The quick lacing system is a big advantage over the V-Train’s. And they come up higher on the foot which makes them better in terms of look than the El-X’s. I have worn them at the gym once so far doing box step-ups and barbell and kettlebell exercises and I had no complaints.Compared to the other models I’ve tried: the El-X’s would have been great had their top portion of the shoe where the foot goes in came up a bit higher. They look like a slipper sock which is not the look I’m going for. The V-Train’s might be best for a trail hiker shoe since their outsole is made of a tougher Polyurethane construction. I can’t feel very much of the ground in them but they’d probably make walking on tree roots and misc. rocks a breeze on a trail. They look great too. The main downside of the V-Train’s, other than the harder outsole (which is a positive and a negative), is that it takes significantly longer to tie and fit them under the Velcro top strap, which adds precious seconds to an already lengthy foot-insert ‘exercise’.In terms of sizing, my left foot measures 10.75” and my right measures 11.25”, which usually puts me in a size 12 US/46 EU, but I found that my toes only go up half way into their respective toe sleeves in that size. I consider the whole point of Five Finger shoes to be able to move my toes around inside the sleeves, so I went down to a size 11.5 US/size 45 EU, and it’s a near perfect fit on the KSO’s and the other models too. I can even wear toe socks in with them if I want. There are 2 main downsides that I find with these shoes and specifically the KSO Evo’s. First, like a pairing knife, it’s a very specialized tool. If you try to wear these anywhere outside a gym environment, they will not do very well to protect you from the elements. If it’s raining, they will get wet. If you wear them in winter, your feet will get cold. Etc. The other main downside I see is that my foot tends to sweat more when I’m not wearing socks, which will add mild discomfort in these shoes, which I feel are made to be worn without socks. Fortunately they can be machine washed, which I might have to start doing once a month or so. Yet I feel this is the next step in my evolution in minimalist footwear. I am really glad I progressively stepped down in heel heights and I feel I have ‘graduated’ now to Vibram Five Fingers!

This will be a 'triple' review, just to save myself some time. I have three pairs of Vibrams ... the KSO EVO, the V Train and the V Trail. I'll just cut and paste this review to all three. Some general background to give perspective on where I'm coming from when I review these ... I'm pretty new to Vibrams, so I've never worn any of their older models/styles. I'm also new to this kind of minimalist footwear, but I have been wearing wide, flat shoes for quite some time now ... usually Reebok Crossfits. Finally, I had been using 'toe spreaders' for a few weeks before I got my first pair of Vibrams. If you are switching from a super padded, super supportive shoe straight to ANY minimalist shoe, particularly Vibrams, your life is going to suck for a while, IMHO.KSO EVO!!Awesome! Bought these for the gym ... great shoe for lifting and movement based workouts! Wanted the laces to be better able to modify the fit ... other than that, they're like a slipper with toes! Form fitting, grippy, comfy! I did have to order a size up ... many other reviews reflect this as well. The toes are a bit shorter compared to the V Train/V Trail. These are super basic and seem to keep to the original barefoot idea that started the company ... or so it has been explained to me.V Train!!The most like an actual shoe. Has much more structure than the other two. Heavier and more rigid with the least ground feel of the three. What you'll think of these depends on your starting point ... if you go from regular sneakers to these, they're super light and minimal! If you go from the KSO EVO or something similar to these, they feel overbuilt and heavy. I got them for an 'everyday' shoe ... I wear them to work in a warehouse as well. These have a break in period ... especially the top of the foot where the straps cross. Pretty uncomfortable at first! Now I don't even notice I'm wearing them. Really like this shoe for general use, but I would stick with the KSO EVO for the gym, unless you really need something heavier or need the rope grip feature on the instep.V Trail!!I read a bunch of reviews that said these were uncomfortable, overbuilt and gave no ground feel. I feel EVERY rock, root and piece of debris. Definitely more ground feel than the V Train. Light and flexible, very slipper like. Not so sure about the 3D Cocoon technology. Doesn't feel much different to me except right on the ball of the foot. I use these for working out in the park and hiking. Not sure I would ever actually run with theses, at lease not with any speed. Nicely padded tongue, a little more cushion overall, and very comfortable right out of the box.

These shoes are simply amazing. They are very comfortable, fit great, and walking in them are really cool! It took a bit of getting used to as someone who's worn regular running shoes for a while, but otherwise they are fantastic! Can't say enough good things about them.
