There is some confusion between which steels hone and which ones sharpen. This oval/diamond type are definitely sharpeners (despite what it says on the box) and this one works brilliantly. You can feel the texture of the diamond grit as you use it and it brought my blades up from dull to razor sharp in a dozen strokes.I'll be interested to see how long it lasts, but I have faith in the Swiss design and German manufacture.
