I've used a filet knife for getting the scales off fish, particularly salmon (their skin is good to eat if descaled), but always hated how a lot of the scales go flying all over when doing it that way. I picked up this scale remover in the hope that it would work without making the same mess. What I've found it that the scaler works much quicker and easier at removing the scales, but doesn't do much at all for preventing the scales from going all over. I have some ideas I'm going to try, like using a paper towel as a blanket over the fish and scaler while being used, but by itself, it didn't accomplish quite what I was hoping. I'm still very happy I picked it up because of how much quicker and easier has made it to get the scales off. What's more, being stainless steel and apparently well made, I can put it right in the dishwasher, so cleanup is quick and easy.

Good quality manual fish scaler. The scaler was very light compared to others that I have used. The handle was hollow and that makes the entire tool very light. Light is a good thing when you have a limit of panfish to clean. The loop on the end is thoughtful as it can be easily hung in a spot that you can remember when you need to scale some more fish. The teeth did a good job on scaling the perch I had recently caught. I was surprised that tool did such a good job as the teeth were not particularly sharp, but they definitely made short work of a tedious yet simple task.
