NEGATIVES: several others have commented that they have nearly stabbed themselves using the curved tool. I believe this is perfectly safe (and very useful too) in a skilled pair of hands, but please take care, my advice follows and I would suggest you should NOT let under 18’s use this tool!POSITIVES: this is a brilliant pair of tools. First you use the pointed end like a carpenter would use a bradawl: just press it hard into one of the "eyes" at the top of the coconut and twist. I usually find one of the three eyes is soft enough to allow a hole to be twisted in. I then turn the coconut upside down on top of a glass and watch the milk empty out into the glass without spilling a single drop. (In my case, the milk is usually then added to homemade pina coladas). My old method of harvesting the milk was to throw the coconut hard onto the patio to crack open the nut: this method spills about half of the milk!You can then use the heavy end of the same tool to smash the coconut into several large pieces. Now use the curved knife to get to the flesh. The safety problem comes if you try to remove the flesh in one piece – this doesn’t really work and could lead to stabbing yourself in the hand. Suggest prise pieces of the coconut shell off the meat rather than trying to prise the meat out of the shell, and make sure you just do a little at a time.SUMMARY: I love these two tools now I have worked out how to use them safely. Great fun for coco-nuts like me.
