Dreadful, flimsy bit of kit. Totally unfit for purpose. Very difficult to fit. Unrobust plastic parts. Very disappointing.

Another great engineering product from Wittner. First, I'm extremely biased towards Wittner products for all of my stringed instruments. I use Wittner products throughout (chin rests, shoulder rests, pegs, tailpieces, etc.). I'm not a rep or employee of Wittner. I have just come to really appreciate their products; their ease-of-use; their engineering and their durability. Although the Wittner Isny shoulder rest is a little expensive (compared to others), it's simply terrific and extremely consistent every time I snap it into place. First: the Wittner Isny is about half the weight of other shoulder rests. My violin model weights 45 grams. My viola model weighs 46 grams.....yes, there is a little difference between the violin and viola models. The Wittner Isny violin has a 6mm foam pad. The Viola model has a slightly thicker 8mm foam pad. Both snap and fit the base. I imagine that Wittner (like everyone else) makes the viola shoulder rest foam pad a little thicker to accommodate the slightly heavier weight/length of a viola. As compared to the very common Everest EZ shoulder rest. The Everest violin weighs 75 grams with 7mm padding. The Everest EZ viola model weighs 94 grams with 10mm of foam padding. I personally prefer the flatter feel of the Wittner Isny, as compared the majority of shoulder rests that are curved. I find the flatter models give me more freedom and flexibility in my playing and movement. Besides the weight savings, the Wittner Isny is completely free floating....only the vertical brackets/columns touch the frame and edge of the instrument. Everything else is free from the instrument. I personally find my tone a little better with the Wittner (as compared to Everest, Kun, Fiddlerman and others). I've tried about everything over the last several years. The foam pad is replaceable and washable (it snaps into the flexible plastic arm). The rest of it is extremely adjustable so that you can find the perfect depth, height and angle. I have posted a few pictures of my setup. I kinda prefer a very steep angle (but that's me). The brackets and hardware are different between the violin and viola model because of the difference in the instrument's thicknesses. The black plastic brackets/columns are longer (as well as the hardware) on the viola model shoulder rest. Once you have adjusted the shoulder rest into the position you like best, you simply insert the extension arm (with pad) into the open hole of the base; then rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn. You will feel it sorta snap or lock into place. Then you simply just lock the shoulder rest into place with a very small plastic lever on the base (again, see photos). During performances and practice, I never have to worry about the Isny shoulder rest becoming loose, falling off or moving out of position.....it's simply there; exactly where I need it every time. Wittner products always receive the very best compliment that I can give: it does exactly what it is built to do - nothing more - but most importantly, nothing less - all of the time - every day.
