Falling Sands
8 december 2024
First as others have said it is clearly built to last. Purchasers need to realise that it really needs a long handle to ensure it is used efficiently, i.e. whilst standing upright. Wolf Garten provide their own handle for use with other implements, albeit of course at an extra charge. I avoided this need by using a length of rigid plastic tubing (metal would be fine) to insert the metal prong into.I mixed my seed with some DRY sharp sand, with the larger (5mm) chips sieved out. As others have said the key to a consistent delivery is to do some 'trial and error' using a sheet of paper. This involves twisting the two halves of the sowing drum against eachother to regulate the size of the overlapping delivery holes. If the holes are too big the seeds come out in clusters, if too small they don't come out at all. Once you have the delivery right you are away. The big advantage of mixing your seed with sharp sand is that you can see the delivery deposits clearly (approx every 40mm or so along the row. I was attempting to deliver 200 seeds over approx 7m and needed another run. This enabled me to drop the second run of seeds between the delivery of the first batch. Whilst the delivery is never going to be perfect, it was sufficiently even to make this a far better way of sowing small seeds than by hand. When the seedlings appeared they were remarkably evenly distributed.I was sowing leeks and shallots - both small seeds - so this product gets full marks from me.
