So, I suddenly find myself playing in a gigging band again. Sadly I've spent all my bucks on guitar gear, and - in these modern times of software amp-sims and so on - had neglected to invest in any bass oriented stage gear whatsoever. Queue procurement of a combo amp from a local source, and (after briefly considering and discounting savaging bits of my guitar pedalboard) this: a low cost - high value bass multi-fx stomp box from Zoom.I've used Zoom products before; had a 505 in the 90's for a while, and then bought the excellent G3X in the early 00's for recording which I still use on my board for it's looper and as a backup for the other effects. I've grown quite used to relying on Zoom to deliver the goods (plus a few pleasant surprises) for low cost, and so I had quite high expectations of this little unit, which I'm happy to say have been largely exceeded. It's worth noting that the size of the B1 four is TINY - not only is it small on the floor, it's pretty slim too. This is a really good thing as it can be thrown easily into a bag, or gig bag pocket. I get envious glances from my Helix toting guitarist when I turn up to rehearsals with just a gig bag.Plastic it may be, but the physical casing seems very tough. The shell seems to be made of about 3-5mm of ABS type material over a metal chassis. The paddle-like footswitches seem really tough too, so no worries about durability there. The row of control knobs worry me a bit as they stick out some and look like the obvious point of failure while throwing it into gig-bags, kicking it around the stage etc. But at this price it doesn't have to last forever I guess. The B1 four's user interface is easy enough to get to grips with without spending ages pouring over the manual, especially if you're used to Zoom and it's way of doing things. Essentially there are three 'modes' of operation, 'Stomp', 'Memory' and 'Setup' that can be cycled through with a single button. 'Setup' is where patches and effects can be edited. The patches are simple to work with in 'Memory' mode and there are some nice features like Preselect, that allow you to work with them more easily in a live setting.'Stomp' mode (where I tend to have it live) is there should you want to use it like an old-fashioned pedal board. Switching in and out (up to) five chained effects using only two footswitches is never going to be as smooth as on larger units, as you have to use one pedal to select the effect and the other to switch it on/off. Compared to just stomping on an effect to turn it on, this is quite a dance. The small size of the unit works against it too: The display can be difficult to see, especially in the 'heat of battle'. It's also easy to accidentally activate the tuner by hitting both pedals at once, leading to embarrassing cut-outs mid gig. On the upside, I REALLY like the built in tuner: It's fast, accurate and very easy to read on-stage as it uses the large button LED's across the width of the device to show the pitch, so my aging eyes have no trouble with it.In terms of the sounds on offer, you can't fault it. Really good modulations, the EQs sound nice, the Amp-sims and distortions less so when soloed, but perfectly adequately capture the essence of whatever they are simulating in a mix. Even the patches are mostly useful - great demos of what the zoom can do and ideal starting points for your own ideas. This is absolutely classic for Zoom: Everything is either excellent, or fine when used in a stage/rehearsal room mix, which is where this stuff excels. Overall its cheap and useful enough for even experienced players to sling in a gig-bag in case something else more expensive goes bang.To drive the point home: When I first got the Zoom, I didn't really have time to play about with it. I just took it into rehearsal, plugged it in front of the old combo, selected the 1st default amp simulation patch, turned off the cab emulation and immediately got compliments on the sound. More so when I kicked in the tube OD simulation that happened to be on that patch, which made my $100 (just for recording) bass roar through the mix pretty much like the 'real thing' is supposed to do. Nice. It's hard to imagine anyone not really appreciating this effect unit for what at delivers at such a low cost. I think maybe if you're really after high fidelity tones for recording, soloing or in small arrangements it might not quite deliver. Otherwise, it offers an instantly useful array of effects at the fraction of the cost of individual pedals and amps that is absolutely going to nail it in a rehearsal room or on a stage between a live drummer and a largely drunken audience, which is where it belongs.
