First, I have to say, I agonised for longer than is appropriate to agonise over a garden tool. But I made the right choice. I have a patch in my garden that I wanted to plant raspberries in, but the soil was quite clay heavy, and was dry and almost concrete hard.I wanted something hand held, rather than a full sized mattock. I prefer to sit or kneel where I am working in the garden, plus I feel this gives me much more control. The tool was easy to use, but effective. It wasn't so heavy it hurt my hands to use, but still effective enough to break up the hardened soil. This tool was the tool I was looking for. It did everything I wanted.It is small but mighty. It's well made and sturdy, which is what I expected from this brand. I've since found I reach for this tool for other jobs. I had an area in the garden with several stubborn brambles that were starting to take over, and this made it easy to get to the roots.If you have a decent sized garden, this tool is definitely one to keep in the tool kit, as you will find a lot of uses for it.

I read the reviews so went for draper over roughneck. It does indeed seem well made see pics - the ground edges are sharp, the hole looks well formed and the head is one piece (not welded). When you slide the head over the shaft use another hammer or weight to tap the top of the handle through the head. So it becomes very firmly wedged. I used a dead weight hammer I have.The handle is longer than expected. Weight is good. Bought this for digging small holes in the earth for plants and it seems perfect.
