Works like a large hammer, to dig hard soils and cut roots. It did need some extra sharpening to effectively cut the roots.

I bought this small roughneck cutting mattock February 2018 and want to write a review of my thoughts since then.The village I live in is renowned for having extremely rocky soil. Dig more than an inch and You hit rock, lots of it. Digging over some raised beds after winter is made very easy whereas the hoe or other garden tool would be useless.also have a large area of semi-woodland that I'm trying to turn into usable garden, it's totally overrun with brambles, some of which are 1/2" thick and this little tool is excellent. I use it in combination with the larger Roughneck cutting mattock, that goes in, breaks up the soil and exposes the roots, then I use the smaller mattock to work over the area, getting out as much root as possible.As a large part of the garden is pebbled, it becomes overrun with grass/weeds very quickly. This gadget helps me keep on top of the problem, rather than spraying reseller everywhere.I have very bad arthritis so anything I can use to help is appreciated. I can't praise this tool enough.I sharpen it after each use to remove any dinks and it goes through roots like butter. It doesn't come sharpened, to comply with UK Health and Safety regulations but it's easy enough with a flat file. The head does have to be knocked on so it's nice and solid but I've had no issues with this or the larger version becoming loose and believe me, they've both had heavy use on tough ground and have stood up exceptionally well.I don't always write reviews but this is the one tool I've had no regrets buying. If this one wears out of can't be sharpened anymore, I've no qualms about purchasing another.

Das Teil hackt alles kurz und klein. dabei ist Größe und Gewicht eben genau so, dass es am Gürtel nicht stört.Ein bisschen nachschleifen ist oft ratsam...

I bought some plants for the garden and found this incredibly useful for digging out the holes. Much better than a trowel or other implement. You need to try it to understand. It breezes past stones and roots and makes life easy. Its small, strong and above all light. Worth a punt and you can always use it on a mountaineering holiday if we can ever get away again!
