This is a great sensor for the money. I use these on my race truck and race shops have incredible markup on this stuff. This sensor is the standard 3 wire and does a great job.

I connected this proximity sensor to a 12VDC power supply, 200ohm resistor, and a diode. The connection is a simple three wire setup. As described the sensor is normally closed so the LED illuminates as soon as power is applied. Once ferrous metal is within range of the sensor the LED goes out with just a slight glow of leakage current which may be eliminated with a higher resistor.The gap on this sensor is very tight, probably best at business card width. It works fine, but choose your detection distance carefully and make sure the application fits.
