Perfect fit

Needed some new wheels to enable replacement of the plastic wheels on Hornbys old HAA wagons (R249) which I am building up a rake of for use on my friends model railway. The old wheels are to small in diameter.I read elsewhere that someone else had done the same project and recommended these 14.1mm wheels as ideal replacements. If I was a rivet-counter, then the wheels should have brake discs cast into them and Hornby do these as well, but I have started the project now, so will continue to fit these!There are sufficient axles in the pack to do ten wagons.They are very well finished with a good pinpoint on each end - ideally brass bearing cups should be fitted to the axleboxes on the wagons to get the least rolling resistance, but I am doing the project to a budget so mine are running in the plastic bearing cups as moulded on the wagon.The finish of the wheels means they dont take paint particularly well, but perhaps an etch primer would help - I have have left mine unpainted as they are hardly seen from normal viewing angles.Recommended.

I am a HO model railroader in the US who developed an interest in OO gauge because of some London tram models I had acquired. A few years back, I built a shelf line to run these trams and I included a section of track for a British Rail DMU set I bought in England in the 1970's. I recently decided to "expand" by buying a OO gauge steam engine and two coaches via on-line auctions. One of my coach acquisitions was an old Hornby model. As it turned out, it had wheel sets that were not properly gauged to run on HO track which OO should do. This resulted in the coach constantly derailing at my grade crossings (level crossings in Great Britain) and two crossings where my tram line intersected the railroad track. Because the wheel sets on the car were molded as one piece, I could not re-gauge the wheels. I discovered however that Hornby now made new wheels sets that reportedly could correct the problem. I found them on-line at Positronic and bought them. When they arrived, I popped out the old wheels and inserted the new ones which was very easy to do. The coach now runs great with these new wheel sets. It rolls effortlessly and tracks fabulously. I could not be more pleased.
