The size is great (A4) and the quality of the book is top notch. Jake has written a fantastic guide from the absolute basics and history of the instrument to more advanced techniques, all in an way that is very easy to follow. Every song has some technical help and also some comments about why it has been chosen or information about the song. Great book that I recommend.

Zugängliche Literatur über das Spielen der Xiao ist rar. Umso besser, dass es dieses Buch von Jake Pinnick gibt. Der Amerikaner lebt inzwischen in China und erweist sich als geschickter Lehrer. In behutsamen Schritten führt er in das Instrument ein und liefert gleich eine ganz Sammlung von Melodien mit. Auf seinem Youtube-Kanal gibt es die notierte Musik zu hören, außerdem viele Tipps noch dazu. DIe englische Sprache ist einfach gehalten und deshalb gut verständlich. So wünscht man sich Einführungen in (fremde) Musikinstrumente und ihre Musik.

Each day I find myself growing more confident. Pinnick is an excellent instructor. His book gently guides the novice through the path of learning this wonderful instrument. When you put yourself into the hands of an outstanding instructor, like Pinnick, learning is a true joy. Each day, I can't wait until I can work through another lesson or 2.If you own a xiao or if you are contemplating a xiao purchase, I highly recommend this well written guide.
