At her best, Martha Mier reminds me of a loose Gershwin -- swinging, moody and fun as hell. I worked my way through the first book in this series, while also working through the first two books of the Alfred Adult All-in-One Course, and they complement each other well. Alfred bounces off some of these musical touchstones -- blues, ragtime, jazz -- while Mier lives there. Book 2 here is a lot like the first book, a bit more challenging perhaps, more mysterious and yes, more fun. Intermediate students interested in taking their first steps into the world of jazz and major-key blues really could do a lot worse than these books.Some minor criticisms (and I mean minor): Chords aren't identified here and fingering suggestions are sparse, where they appear at all. It's really fine; this isn't meant to be an exploration of theory. Don't let that stop you.
