Peter and the Wolf, it's one of those pieces that's always been around, whistling about in the back of my head. Thirty years later since I pretended that I was Peter and the neighbor's chained-up dog the wolf, I discover a friend's little girl is learning the music in preschool. So, we watched the old Disney version together, which was great. But why not have a live performance? I ordered the sheet music, it arrived the next day, and the following night (after a little practice- this is not beginner's level playing by any means), had a really great time with it. Her mother read the narration (which is included), while she and her older brother sat nearby, wrapped in excitement, and the rest of the family sat about in the living room listening in. A fantastic memory. This is the complete score, transcribed for piano by Prokofiev himself, so you get every little bit of the crazy you love in the orchestral arrangement.

This is an excellent piano reduction score of Peter and the Wolf. And I love the fact that it was actually done by the composer himself.I've always loved Peter and the Wolf. Great well-defined themes, and each on a different instrument. This score is clearly marked for basic orchestration also, but nicely playable on piano. Not too simple, like most piano scores of this work.

Easier to play than I thought it would be.

I purchased this on a whim, as I've had this tune stuck in my head for ages. I've looked extensively for other piano reductions, but as one reviewer said, the composer's is the best. It's definitely not an "easy" score by any means, but with a little practice is fun to play and captures most if not all of the whimsical nature of the orchestral version. The narration is included in several language, so it's also a good score for entertaining, if that's your aim.

I'm not sure what the "New" label on the cover means, since Schirmer brought this score out in 1999 - anyway, it's a beautifully printed score for personal use and an inexpensive resource if you're teaching this music to children in preparation for a live performance, etc. This is Prokofiev's own reduction, so it's fairly demanding, but can easily be simplified, and it's easy to pick out the instruments that he associates with the characters - great fun if you have a well-voiced keyboard or student musicians to demonstrate the different themes. Highly recommended.
