Originally I'd planned on getting a Roland Cube 80GX, but this has gone end of line and was literally impossible to get hold of. That left me in a bit of a quandary. I wanted an amp that could give me a really great clean sound as I'm trying to add Jazz guitar to my repertoire, yet the obvious choice within my original price range wasn't available. Though there are several other amps in the same price bracket as the Cube 80 (circa £250), I didn't have confidence in many, and couldn't find anything that had the same clarity of projection. After re-evaluating my position I put price out of my mind and instead worked purely on the basis of what would fit my needs and please my ears. After listening to a host of Marshall, Fender, Orange and other amps, I found myself inevitably drawn back to Roland, and more precisely their Jazz Chorus (JC) range. While it would have been amazing to get my hands on a JC120, the size and cost actually meant it didn't fit my requirement. The new JC40 however did. What did not was the nearly £600 price tag. That literally left only the JC22, of which I was deeply skeptical. While it had the usual Roland quality, it was also the smallest in power output (30W) and speaker size (2 x 6.5 inch), making me unsure whether it would deliver the goods. At £379 it wasn't exactly cheap either, but I decided to take a punt and I am so glad I did!For such a small package this amp packs quite a punch, and I don't necessarily just mean volume. It has the same excellent, solid build quality of it's larger, more expensive siblings, alongside an equally beautiful clean sound projection. Taking it out of its box it just screams quality. With the capability to produce true stereo, and with the inclusion of the signature Chorus effect built in I really couldn't be happier with my purchase. It arrived literally next day thanks to Amazon delivery, and when I plugged my guitar in and played around with the full range of tones I couldn't get the smile off my face. It's size is that of a practice amp, yet due to the sheer quality of construction and component choice it sounds and feels like an amp twice the size and output. While disappointed that I couldn't get my hands on a Cube 80 and had to fork out a fair chunk more more for what originally felt like less, this is still a fantastic amp that perfectly fits my needs for jazz, blues, rock or whatever I try to put my hands to. Ok so its not cheap, but it is a quality piece of kit with a wonderful clean tone - overall I'm very happy. Maybe I'll save up a bit more and get a JC40 or even 120 one day, but for now this little gem will easily suffice.

Incredible amplifier, has the classic sound of the original jazz chorus (from 1975) and can get extremely loud, even by dialing up the volume knob to 8 or 9 o'clock so it's perfect for home use, or even small crowds/clubs etc. I was afraid of it not sounding as great as the JC-40 and 120, but it's all there in this smaller version, I don't really have words to describe how beautiful and lush it sounds. The build quality is also very solid, it's portable and heavy enough too unlike some of the other Roland products that are released nowadays that have questionable build quality. While this doesn't have distortion on it like the JC-40 and 120, effects pedals will do it justice as well. The only downside I can think of with this amp is that in order to enable both speakers, you must push the 'Depth' chorus knob to about 20% which makes sense to be honest, but you still have L and R ports to use anyhow. Other than that, incredible amp used by many legends and highly recommended if you're wanting that classic JC sound.
