I tried this with WIndows and Linux. Neither OS recognised the device and I could not find any drivers for it. I therefore returned the item.

First I was sent the 4k model when I ordered the 8k, then I returned and re-ordered and received the 8k model. This review is not about that mix up but rather that it simply doesn't do what it says on the tin. This does not support Freesync on the Asus ROG Ally X. By comparison I have another inexpensive adapter which supports 10-bit 4k at 144Hz on the Ally X but still won't do Freesync. The best I can get out of this is 8-bit 4k @120Hz with no Freesync support. Even bringing the resolution down to 1080p won't get Freesync working. I have several capable adapters and only bough this for the advertised Freesync support, then had to hassle sending it back once already, now I guess I'll just have this as a backup to avoid more hassle :/

Does not work with 4k 120hz on either macbook or Windows. Also the manufacturer warranty process requires sending it back at your own expense, I decided just to return it to Amazon.

I battle-test these kinds of adapters with my 57" Samsung G9, which at 8K (4K x 2) 240Hz can max out pretty much every cable in existence. I was able to get these to support 4K@120Hz from a Mac and a PC, which is great and enough for 99% of people. Unfortunately I couldn't get 7160x2140 resolution out of it, which some HDMI 2.1 adapters can do at 120Hz, but most people won't need that resolution and will be served fine by this adapter.

UPDATE 10/23/2024After using this for several days I can confirm that it continues to work flawlessly. Not one problem with my monitor coming out of power save. Picture quality and performance are amazing!ORIGINAL REVIEWFirst, I'm only using this on a FHD monitor, so I cannot speak to its performance at 8k or even 4k. My reason for buying this was that I figured if it's built to handle up to 8k it would be able to handle FHD without breaking a sweat and be future-proof should I decide to upgrade my monitor at some point.I recently bought a Dell OptiPlex 7020 micro form factor PC that comes with a standard HDMI 1.4b port and DisplayPort 1.4a port. I was initially using the HDMI port, since that's what my monitor has. I felt that any movement seemed a bit blurry (scrolling lists of items, web pages, etc.). I checked the refresh rate, and it was maxed out at 60hz. The PC also included a USB-C video port with HDMI 2.1/DisplayPort 1.4a/VGA/USB Type-C with DisplayPort Alt mode. So, I bought this USB-C to HDMI adapter to see if using that port would provide better video performance, and it did!I now have the ability to select up to 100hz refresh rate, which I've done. Video motion is silky smooth now and everything appears crisp and clear. It also gives me 10-bit color depth compared to 8-bit with the HDMI port. This was a great purchase, and I am completely happy with it.I just plugged this adapter into the USB-C port and plugged my existing HDMI cable into it.This adapter works flawlessly and seems very well made. I had tried a different brand of this type of adapter before buying this one and while it did provide video it only had 8-bit color, and the deal breaker was that it would not allow my monitor to come out of power save mode after Windows put it to sleep. I always had to power cycle the monitor to get it to work. This one does not have that problem at all. I love it and I highly recommend it!
