The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol 1: Piano/Vocal/Chords

This is excellent. Highly recommended fOr people who like his music. Suitable for intermediate standard. Would recommend to anyone who liked the music on the CDs.

Timely delivery

This a great songbook for the intermediate and above pianist. This book contains the sheet music to Newman's CD, "The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1" (2003).The book begins with a one-page biography of Randy Newman. This is followed by a couple pages of photos and then 4 pages of lyrics. The last section of the book contains the sheet music.The sheet music itself contains accurate transcriptions of each song on the CD. It is not "dumbed-down" and transcribed to the key of C like so many other publications. I was especially excited to see the music for "Avalon" and "Let Me Go," the latter of which was not available until this publication.The music is cleanly printed on quality paper. Guitar chord diagrams are also provided, although I have not tried the music on guitar.I would not try to tackle these songs as a beginner, but an intermediate player (if you can play something like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata) should do fine.I would definitely recommend this book to any pianist who is a Randy Newman fan.

what a treat this is! Newman's style has a wonderful and unusual texture. I spent a few hours just diagraming the harmonies on Marie and Ragtime. Having the solo piano audio makes this a great resource for pianists. While his songs sound simple - many use parallel sixths with an abundance of counterpoint. None of this is trivial. And of course after following the music and understanding its construction it's possible to begin riffing a bit and changing things up. For a beginner piece check out "leave your hat on" which is pretty much 36 bars of vampping. But it works!
