I cannot believe it took over 60 years for someone to design and manufacture a safer craft knife! Regardless, I'm damn glad Tim Holtz did!I've used various X-Acto knives and blades professionally (as a layout artist in the time before desktop publishing) and as a hobbyist for over 42 years. One thing that has _always_ bothered me about the various X-Acto knives and compatible third-party knives is the loose-fitting covers used to cap the knives -- the surgically-sharp knives!I stumbled upon the Tim Holtz retractable hobby knife whilst searching for a replacement rotary trimmer. As I looked over Mr. Holtz's website I realized his specialty is in designing craft tools that address the shortcomings of existing craft tools on the market. When I saw his retractable craft knife, I was at first skeptical. Afterall, no one seems to have come up with an alternative in the time since X-Acto first created their original knife and #11 blades in the early 1900s! There also weren't many reviews of Tim Holtz's retractable knife. The few reviews that do exist are favorable, but the cynic in my head kept saying, "if this knife is all that and a bag of chips, there ought to be rave reviews all over Amazon and the other online stores where the knife is sold."I finally decided to give this knife a try. I figured that the worst that would happen is that it would be junk and I'd be out $12 plus sales tax.As soon as the knife arrived it was put to immediate use. I'm now using the knife every day. I'm happy to report that the Tim Holtz craft knife has unseated my X-Acto X2000 as my day-to-day craft knife.I know there are other retractable craft knives out there, even X-Acto has one. However, I found the small differences with the Tim Holtz knife really set it apart.* The button to retract (or remove) the blade sits lower on the barrel of the knife.* The entire barrel, except for the retract button mechanism is rubberized for better grip.* The end of the knife has a hoop shape making it convenient to hang with other tools. It's a keeper!

When fitted into the slot, there is most of the blade visible which means that it bends when cutting, so getting a straight line is impossible. If more of the blade went inside the slot it would make the blade more stable.Very disappointed. It's not even sharp enough to cut through a cardboard mount for a picture frame when run along a metal ruler.
