It's a no-brainer, don't spend as much time as I did researching! This camera packs incredible value at this price point compared to competition, as was my best buy for 2024.BackgroundI spent hours on end researching infrared cameras, watching youtube videos, etc. IR technology still felt quite immature... I mean, how could resolutions as low as 160 × 120 be of any use?! Of course I had never used one until this order :) Additionally, I wanted a 'dual lens' version which overlays the IR image with a regular image to provide better visibility. Long story short, I settled on this TC001 Plus camera, as it provided the best features in this price range.Initial issues: make sure you calibrate! The first camera I received was constantly 'warmer' by 4°C on the top right hand corner which was problematic when measuring temperatures of a surface with very little temperature variation across the screen. It was so problematic in fact, after further research, I discovered this was a somewhat common issue, and one reviewer on here said Topdon had replaced their camera for them. So I purchased a second one, thinking mine had an issue, but the second camera was slightly worse! That's when I discovered, buried deep in the App's menus, a calibration feature. Needless to say, after completing calibrations, both cameras were uniform. Honestly, the Topdon app should force users to calibrate on first use, I'm sure that would avoid quite a few returns.Pros- Excellent 256x192 resolution for this price point- Two cameras for overlay and clearer images (with the possibility to align both cameras in the app for a more precise image)- Super simple to use: plug in the camera and the app starts up- The app is actually quite good and full of features- You can lock min/max temperatures to colourise only what you are looking for, e.g. identify only hot or cold spots (this is super useful)- Temperatures seem accurate (provided you first set ambient temperature of your surroundings) e.g. wall thermometer reading was bang on, kettle was boiling at 99C...- Small and compact, with a great carry case, which means easy to take to work, on holiday, etc.Cons- My biggest bugbear is the App's temperature font's colour: you can only set one colour for all temperatures on screen, which means that it is difficult to read either min or max temperatures depending on the colour you've picked. Ideally, the app should dynamically use the inverse of the image's colour to display the temperature, that way values are easy to read at all times- Battery drainer! This camera is thirsty and will suck your phone's battery dry. After 30 mins of use, my battery was down roughly 50%.Achievements- Discovered that two of my internal walls in my 2011 build have no insulation... thumbs up for amazing British construction standards!- Discovered that my 3x electric radiators and 1x heated towel rack (totalling c.24A) all run off a single 20A cable into the fuse box... thumbs up again for outstanding British building standards- Discovered one of my radiators' wall switch needed replacing as it was overheating- Discovered cold patches on the ceiling and walls- Discovered cold air leakages between walls and floors (which I've now filled)- Discovered that my router sitting on top of virginmedia's hub 5 was not a good idea as temperatures reached 66C- Can actually visualise the cinder blocks of the building through the layers of smooth external paint- Can visualise the fridge's heat pipes on the side wallsSummaryDon't think twice, if you're a DIY'er like me, and don't have this essential device in your toolkit, get it. It's by far my best buy of 2024!
