W.a. mozart: complete string quintets with the horn and clarinet quintets

This collection not only contains all of Mozart's string quintets, but also the clarinet quintet, the horn quintet, and a string-quintet arrangement (by Mozart) of the c minor serenade, K. 388.Music never gets any better than this, and it is wonderful to have all of these items in large, readable, score.

Useful for assessing difficulty and playability for amateurs

I bought five used copies from various sellers for a amateur group I play in. It is very nice to have the score to learn and check the ensemble. The measures are not numbered. It is worthwhile to write them in. We use the Barenreiter edition for the individual parts.The Breitkopf and Hartel edition in the Dover is old, but the reproduction is quite readable and not excessively edited. If your string quartet has an extra violist, clarinetist, or French horn available, this is wonderful music. The last four string quintets and clarinet quintet are all late Mozart and beloved by chamber musicians. They were written from 1787-1791. Before our group reads a work for the first time, I like to practice reading from the score with recordings. Dover has the scores in bound volumes for many of the great chambers works. They are inexpensive particularly if you find used copies.

Dover Scores are always in my experience excellent value. The A4 (approximately) size makes them easy to read and leaves room for pencilled notes if you want to make them, The bindings are strong but enable the score to be opened flat easily. High quality paper and durable covers.I have loved these amazing compositions for years. Following different recorded performances reading the scores has been a way of getting to know the music better. Listening while following the scores is a different kind of experience (no better or worse) than just listening.Miniature (or Study) Scores have the advantage that they can be slipped into pocket or small bag but are harder to read and less amenable to pencilled notes. They may however be easier to use if following the score at a public concert by being less distracting to the people in adjacent seats.
